I'm dreading tomorrow.   I have a 19 year old
cat who has a vet appointment tomorrow.  My fear
is the vet will say it's time, it's time
to put the cat to sleep.

He has a heart condition, he is taking
Atenelol twice a day,   he is getting
what looks like arthristis, and now
has some diarehha.

Am I just being paranoid?

I hope you are, and that you have several more years with your kitty. It's
possible.
Doesn't sound like his problems are heart-related though. But as long as he is
comfortable, eats well and seems to enjoy life, I'd keep him around as long as
possible.
Man. You're very lucky to have had him so long. You must have taken very good
care of him. Good luck.

How is his over-all quality of life? Is he is alot of pain? Is he happy?
etc etc...

I dont see what you said as being a problem unless the diarrehea is a
symptom of something greater..

A cat of that age IS going to have signs of being aged(heart problems,
kidney problems and arthritis)...but that doesnt mean he should be put down

Hang on and see what the vet says...

Good Luck DW

I had the unfortunate situation of taking my very first cat to the vets for
a small problem, she ended up being put down. I was devastated and cried,
yes a grown man crying in the vets... Her name was Millie and I was gutted.
Just reading this post had me a little upset and I hope you will be ok and
your puddy have a few more years with you..

My wife and I were both in tears (I'm 53) when we took our cat to the
vet for exploratory surgery. We didn't know if we would see him again
and I will never forget the gut wrenching experience.

I wish DW all the best and hope this has a happy ending.

Go to the vet.  But it is not up to the vet to decide -- it is up to
you.  And I think you should leave it up to the cat.  The bottom line is
that, if the cat is eating, it wants to live and I say, let it live.
When the cat decides it doesn't want to go on, it will stop eating.  You
wouldn't kill your wife or child because they were uncomfortable.

That cat still has a lot of love to give.  Enjoy it.

Regards,

Minus

Update on the situation as it stands now: the vet appointment is
only about two hours away, the cat is eating although when
I feed him I feel like the state giving a condemned man his
last meal.

He is eating well, but I fear that the vet will suggest that
maybe it is time to end his suffering.   You can tell he
walks stiffly, is that stiffness arthritis?  I'm not sure.

We'll see what happens, whatever happens me and my wife will
be there with him.

Don't forget to squeeze all the diarehha out of him..

Good luck. Please let us know what the vet says. Stiffness could very well be
arthritis, and be treatable. I sure hope so.

He may have arthritis, but that doesnt mean he is suffering..
I agree with the other poster who said let the cat decide. If he is
eating well, he still feels ok and wants to live.
My understandng is that there is med for arthitis
