Maybe the cat smells something through that vent? If the vent
is from the basement could the smell be from Carbon Monoxide?
Maybe the cat is trying to tell you something is wrong?

I'm sure he smells something interesting!

Carbon Monoxide is *odorless* if you are even slightly worried about
it...get a Carbon Monoxide detector!

But is it oderless for cats? Something has the cats attention, maybe
it would be wise to take a close look at the situation.

I'm sure CO is odorless for a cat also
but if there is poor combustion there can be other smells emitted...
so it would not be a bad idea for your peace of mind to get a CO
detector.
I'm sure it's smelling something else...but why take a chance ?

The airvent leads directly outside and is there by law because i have a gas
fire that is seviced every year so it should be ok.

Could be anything really: a mouse, a fox, a bird, the wind , another cat
anything reallly. Cats work on smells which is if I;m not wrong at least 16
times better then humans so just imagine your air vent being a bulletin
board for your cat :)
Although i agree with Nick, the smell coming in could be also bad for one
reason or another. Always trust animnals when it comes to senses we cannot
even begin to comprehend. Discovery Animal Planet was showing a dog who can
sniff out cancer on human body.
>Is he trying to see if there are other cats about.
Possibly. Cats are territorial animals, and not very appreciative on
strangers on "their" territory.
>He has been nuetered.
Which is the best thing you could;ve done for him. It should stop him
fighting (although not nececerily) , straying far from home, and
dissapearing for days on end. Not to even mantion the deseases and producing
more unwanted cats.

He dissapeared for 2 weeks once thought we`d seen the last of him.Had him
nuetered after this.He went out again when we brought him home and
disapeared
for the day and he`s never gone for more than a few hours since.
