Cleaning teeth

My cat Charlie is 2, and has never had his teeth brushed.  He doesn't
like any dry cat food I have ever tried, and eats only canned cat
food, which his vet says is causing plaque build up.  I have been told
I need to start brushing his teeth.

The problem is that Charlie is not willing to let me brush his teeth,
and I have a bad scratch from trying to.

Does anybody have any ideas on how to train a cat to allow their teeth
to be brushed?

Does your cat like the toothpaste that you have offered?  I think there are
at least 2 flavors: chicken and tuna, maybe more.  You could try asking the
vet for a mild sedative for the first couple of times for him to get used to
it....... he may even start to like it.  How is he for having his claws
trimmed?
