What toy to buy

Next week is Mickey & Daisy's first birthday.  (link to photos below). So, I'd
like to get them something and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas.  I live
in a small studio apartment, and they already have several small rubber bouncy
things which they like.  The have a scratchy thing on a doorknob which has a
ringy thing on a string which they play with.  They have a large cat tree which
they live in.  I was thinking of either getting them a spongy little ball with
a feathery thing attached, which looks like fun.  I also have a mouse on the
end of a string attached to a pole which I take out occassionally and torture
them with.I was also thinking of one of those round things with a scratching
post in the middle, which lies flat on the ground and has a track in which they
can push a ball endlessly around and around.  It looks like it might be fun,
but I'm afraid the ball would make too much noise and keep me up at night.  I
don't really have much room for another standing scratching thing with stuff
hanging off of it.

Of course, I could always just get them chocolate cake and milk.  Any
suggestions out there.  Small, not too noisy, not too expensive.

I don't know what you consider expensive. I splurged when I bought
my cat "Panic Mouse" (which runs around $25).  It looked like a great
toy....of course Sasha doesn't like it but she's a putz.  The kittens I
fostered loved it.  I gave it to my dad and his two cats seem to really
enjoy it too.  It's this large plastic mouse with a thin pole and furry ball
attached to his tail.  The tail moves around in random fashion (battery
operated) so the cat can chase after the little ball at the end.  Not
sure if anyone else has had any experience with it.

Happy boithday!

You know what, please watch out for that stringy thing on the doorknob.
I made one for Marko and he got his paw tangled up in it and couldn't
get loose. good thing I was home when it happened.

I have two suggestions.  I don't know where you live, but if you are in
the U.S. near a Trader Joe's store, go get one of their cat scratcher
boxes.  they only cost a buck or two but cats love them and so do cat
owners becase the cats actually use them!

Next suggestion is go to the shoe store and buy yourself a nice new pair
of shoes.  Then give the cats the box and be sure to leave the tissue
in.  they will have as much fun with that as any toy you pay money for.

Another thing my one year olds loved was when I took several plastic
laundry baskets, some round and some square, and built a jungle gym for
them to climb around on.  I think cats are like kids, its not how much
money you spend, but how much time you spend with them.

Give them a hug for me.

I have found with mine that each cat has their own personal favorites,
which have nothing to do with what the other ones like. My solution?
Just buy what looks attractive when you have a couple extra bucks, and
hope for the best. I also liked the cardbord box suggestion above. My
cats love them too.

Thanks for your advice.  If the cat scratch box you speak of is a rectangular
box which opens from a slot in the middel, the flap being used to stand it up
of hang it from a door, and the inside of the box being corrugated cardboard .
. . they gotit.  They don't use it.  You have to understand, these guys are
nuts.  They hate catnip also.  They are exceptionally beautiful, and I think
they know it.  So, like many spoiled beauties they decided to forego some cat
traits and bask in their beauty.  The only cat trait they won't get rid of is
jumping on my bare back while I'm at the computer, and before I have mangaed to
wrestle them for their bi-weekly nail clipping.  I don't know why I keep em?

Well, then get them a mirror! LOL

In this case I'd get myself a sisal jumper ...

Because you'd miss all the nonsense they're up to...

I've decided if ever I can't afford the pets anymore I'd get rid of the TV
first. The pets are more and better entertainment anyway. And guess what?
The kids didn't even disagree!

LOL.  I love this.  I have a mirror that is too high up on the wall for them to
look into.  They try, though.  If I put a chair too close they climb on the
chair and try to look into the mirror.  Unbelievable!

Because of you all and your boxes ;-) I kept the last box I received - cat
not interested *at all*! Now I've thrown in a table tennis ball and the box
is fun. Thanks for the tip.
