Eye infection-pills only?

I have an older cat that I've had for six years and must have been abused.
He will still not let me hold him except if I suprise him & then only for
5-6 seconds. Our other cats had eye infections a few months ago but he never
got it. They all went to vet, so I know what this is, yesterday one other
one got it back & went to vet, got pills & drops. Now Patch (the old one)
has it and we just tried the drops, but he went insane & got away before we
got one in. He's under the bed now probably till morning. My question is, I
MAY be able to get some pills down him in food, but we'll never get drops in
without drugging him. I haven't been able to get him in a carrier in about 3
years (luckily he's inside all the time & been healthy). Does anyone think
just the infection pills my cure this, or a vet will give me a sedative pill
to use the drops? Thanks (I'm so upset over this, I hate to scare him, he's
so skittish!)

Why would you assume a cat's abused just because it doesn't let you hold
it for more than a few seconds?

I guess because it took us 3-4 months to get him to trust us outside & after
six years living with us everyday and us being nothing but loving to him,
besides me not being able to hold him, he still runs & hides when my husband
even walks down the hall near him. Maybe he just wasn't socialized as a
kitten.

BUT..good news, I just crushed a pill & he ate it in tuna and then, believe
it or not, I closed him off in the b-room, took a long time petting him, and
I got him to look up at the dropper & one got in!!! Don't know if this will
work everytime, but it's a start. Silly to be so thrilled by something like
that, ha ha.

yeehaw... application of kitty-treats helps, too.

Congrats on getting some drops in. I had a recent eye infection
experience with my kitten who, while he loves being cuddled, does NOT
love having eye drops. My vet said a treat after every dose was
essential in her view. I followed this advice and it did make it
easier, although he was never totally calm about it. The other thing
she said was that vitamins A & C helped the healing and I should get
paediatric vitamin drops for him. I don't know where you are but in
Australia "pentavite" is a commonly available multi-vitamin syrup.
Fortunately Angus liked it so I just gave it off a spoon but it could
be mixed in food as well. Vet said dose was arbitrary as no research
but I gave him 0.5ml/day.

Hope Patch is better soon.

Thanks for the advice, Kate & Angus. I got another pill & drop in Patch this
a.m. and the kitten who had it first, Chipper, his eye already looks almost
clear after 4 drops & pills. Well, he's 11 months, but I still call him "the
kitten". I'll keep dosing them till medicine is gone, but it's a relief it's
working so quick. Take care!!
