Hi All,
I am so sad at the moment and so are my 2 cats.....
On Thursday I went out and as usual I let the cats outside,
when I came home I caught my one cat just about crossing the main road
not far from us. Well my heart skipped a beat, "hey you, get home nowwwwww"
I calmly shouted. She looked at me and ran towards me meowing (thank
goodness).
So to get her to come inside was a pain, cause she was up to her tricks
again ( she comes
closer and runs away, again and again). So this woman is trying to park her
car and this cat
of mine decides to lay in the middle of our cul-de-sac and look all
cute(never mind the roar of the big machine).
When she finally came in, I said "now you've gone and done it, I'm never
ever letting you out again as long as you live".
How unfair am I now....
I feel so crap, but I feel that this way at least I'll keep them alive.
They cry all the time now and look at me with such sorrow that I want to
give in
and give them a lecture and they will listen to me and not go in the road
again..... (fat chance)

there are cat proof enclosures to let them out but keep them contained in an
area in your yard. I have a "cat room" meaning it has three walls and a
ceiling and I've placed it on the side of my house so they can go out a
window to get it. There is also cat fencing as well.
not that I advocate that cats go out.. but I will acknowledge that there are
times when keeping them completely in isn't in anyone's best interest.

Your cats will get over it....ours did, years ago (they were all strays but
not feral). You will have them w/you for a longer time if you don't let them
out anymore. I used to take mine out in yard in a huge steel dog cage
w/bottom (plastic) removed so they could spend time in sun, eat grass, w/me
sitting nearby watchful for loose dogs in 'hood. Remain rock steady in your
decision; they have *no* traffic sense...I'd let a 3-year-old hoomin wander
in street first (NOT).

A hard decision from the cat's point of view, and yet *you* are the one with
wisdom.
How old are your cats? They say that after 2 years old the cats know how to
handle traffic.
I think there's some truth in this. But my neighbour's Persian got killed
when they did roadworks and redirected the traffic.
My beloved Minka got killed at night - most likely by someone who broke the
speed limit (the cat knew how to judge normal traffic).
This afternoon our kitten was under the car when I wanted to drive away...
Cars *are* a major danger to cats. Whenever I see one I toot the horn.
Do what you think is right - good luck!

So it comes down to two choices. Let them run free outside and get
killled by a car or wild animal, or keep them inside and listen to
them complain. For me the choice is clear, I keep my cats inside.
That way they are alive.
Around here there are too many animals who wind up as
Roadkill. No your cats won't understand but they will be
ALIVE to not understand.

None of our five cats ever leave the house without one of us to watch out
after them. They think of going outside as a treat, not a given. I would
never forgive myself if one of them met their end outside.

I let mine out only if I am outside with them to keep an eye on them. they
are usually pretty good and stay in the backyard with me . There are a
couple neighborhood cats I see around every once and a while. I don't know
how they are able to wonder around all day without being hit.
