Cats won't use Drinkwell?

I ordered a Drinkwell a few days ago and installed it. The cats eye it
with suspicion. How can I get them to use it? I've tried playing the
splash water games, etc., but they don't buy it.

I'm very disappointed; I thought they would like it. But they don't
seem too. Perhaps it's just a matter of time?

BTW, I am so scared that they're not getting enough to drink I have
reinstalled their icky bowl of stagnant water, which does get changed
every day. Indicators of level mean they *may* be drinking out of the
dog's (also stagnant) water bowl. But his gets changed daily, too.

yeah...

Live mice brought into house by airhead cat
in the past week:                            4
Mice returned to nature by yours truly:     -1
Mice eventually eaten by other cats:        -2
----------------------------------------------
= Mice left in house:                        1

You might wash the fountain out with a little vinegar and water... I
recently got a water-cooler, the first 9-10 cups tasted horrible.

Just fill the fountain with water to get them used to it first and place it
well.
Once they drink from it, turn it on and move it gradually to where you want
to have it eventually.

Live mice brought into the house last week: 5
Dead mice removed: 5
Birds brought in: 2
Removed: 1
Where's the remaining one ???

Thanks, pat. I will try this. I did notice that even though I rinsed
the filter (as instructed) before installing, there was some carbon in
the water the following morning. Maybe that's a feline turn-off?

The turnoff is probably that they're not used to it, but tasting funny
won't help.  Didn't know they were filtered (makes sense though); I like
the idea of leaving it by their food for a couple days turned off.
<shrug> my cats don't care as long as their servant is providing for them.

Disconnect it and let them become used to it without the noise.

developments....

I have three, and at first my cats were afraid of it, wouldn't go near it.
so I emptied it, and set it in a central area of the house, empty and
unplugged.  Every day I would scoot it (with my foot) a couple of feet
closer to thier regular water dish.  Once they were used to it's presence
there, I added water to it, but still left it unplugged.  After about a
week, I stopped refilling their old water dish, and just let them drink out
of the fountain.  Then another week went by, I cleaned the fountain, added
fresh water & plugged it in.

They loved it!

So I bought 2 more (one was for a d*g, but he's such a sloppy drinker, I had
to wash it every day, so we confiscated it from him and gave it to the
cats).  I have 1 cat that hasn't known any other water source, and when we
had to isolate him for a day after his big snip, he wouldn't drink from the
water dish I gave him, he wanted the fountain - made a beeline for it the
first chance he got, and drank for about 5 minutes.

I'm very impressed that your cats will drink from bowls/fountains. None
of my babies have drunk from their clean, fresh, regularly changed
water bowls with any regularity. My last boy liked licking water off
the shower walls/floor and mud puddles and Angus (current owner!)
drinks almost exclusively from the water that leaks from my toilet
cistern with the occasional lick off the shower or basin! None have
ever had health problems, I just make sure they always have access to
fresh water and trust that they get what they need, whatever the
source.

We have a birdbath outside the kitchen.   The neighbor's cats seem to prefer it
to other sources.   My theory is that the bird poop adds a little flavor.

Our own cat would drink from a bowl only grudgingly.  What she *really* liked
was hopping up on a table when nobody was looking and drinking from somebody's
glass.

So now we just put her water in a tall drinking glass next to the food bowl on
the floor and everybody's happy.

My girl kit does the "sneak a drink out of the Upright Servant's
glass" thing, too, but I'm betting that Pete serves her from
Waterford....

Hoping to see some improvement,
