Are cat's more prone to being lactose intolerant or what?

I was surprised when Kitty's vet told me this when I first got her
too.

The archetypal stereotype of little kittens is that they love milk.

Most cats that I've had will drink it; causes diarrhea in a few that
haven't had it in a while.

I think the (potential) problem is the bacteria that break down the milk
isn't present after kitty's been away from mum for a while.

Adult humans are like that too.  If I go for 6 months without drinking
milk then have a glass I have intestinal problems.

on the other hand I remember this thread from last year and vaguely
remember being wrong on some points

I found this on google:
"But the fact of the matter is that most cats are lactose intolerant. That
means that they can't digest the sugars in milk."

Perhaps you should take some time surfing the web! There is a lot of
information out there that you can find all by yourself - incase you didn't
know!

I give mine albacore in water (canned) once a week. They love it, but
they seem ok with a daily diet of dry.

Everything in moderation!

From what I have heard too much fish can cause urinary tract problems.

And I'm the one who suggests wet+dry.
My cats suggest mostly wet, meat in jelly, if possible.

We rarely give our cats any form of fish.  Less than once every month or
two.  When we do, we give them solid albacore tuna packed in oil, and they
each get about half a can.

On a daily basis they have a constant supply of dry food and a breakfast
and dinner each of 4 oz. canned food.  We've been feeding our cats like
this for years and the youngest death of any cat we had was 17 years.

They're a happy healthy bunch!

Usually a point of indigestion, i.e., diarreah. Most cats don't
tolerate cow's milk well.

Many cats are lactose intolerant, which upset their stomachs and
digestion. Lactose free milk is fine for your cat. Other milks, such
buffalo and goat do not have lactose, and are fine for your cat.

I buy a quart of goat's milk about every 2 weeks.  All 5 of our cats love it.

According to the information I got from my vet when I cat was still a
kitten, most adult cats are lactose intolerant.  Mine is.  She loves to lick
up what's left in my cereal bowl after I've drank the milk so I gave her a
tiny bit in a small bowl one day.  It didn't even cover the bottom of the
bowl.  She drank it and got sick.  I didn't do it again :)  But, it also
says that cats need lots and lots of water to avoid things like urinary
tract infections.  So even if you do give your cat lactose free milk, it
still needs water too.  As far as softer foods, I give mine mostly dry food,
which is fine.  But she does get tuna from time to time, in water, and she
loves these little packs of cat food that have slices of meat in juices.  I
forget the brand.  And she also dances around for a piece of cold cut turkey
from time to time.  Everything in moderation, as was said before.  But it's
also important to remember that changing food too often can upset their
systems.  Mine always has her dry food and from time to time gets the other
things as a treat, not a substitute.  For example, don't feed her dry food
for a few days then take it away in favor of a couple servings of tuna the
next few days.  That's not good for the little kitty.  Hope that helps!

Hear is some info I got from the web.  I do not recall where but I think it was from a
news letter I used to get.

>Dry Matter Value Forumula
>Look at the "Guaranteed Analysis" on a label
[quoted text clipped - 36 lines]
>"Flavor"
>Barely worth mentioning here, but if you see something similar to "chicken flavored," be assured that the product is unlikely to contain any chicken at all, as long as there is a "sufficiently detectable" amount of chicken flavor. Since these "flavors" may be the result of digests or by-products of the named animal, I'd avoid these at all costs.

You should find out who the cat's vet is and contact them.  Milk is on a
per-cat basis IME, but as far as "no wet food" is concerned, I have no idea.

It depends on the cat.  Some cats can not handle it and some can.  The best thing to do is
try a SMALL amount and see if you cats get the runs.  All 6 of mine can drink milk (4 here
& 2 at ex's) with no ill effect but they have had it since they where kittens when I took
them in.  I give it as a treat a couple times a week.

Same with cheese.  Some cats get bound up bad but mine love the shredded cheese.  There
again I do it as a treat a couple times a week.

With a few exceptions, mostly humans from cultures based on milk,
adult mamals are lactose intolerant because their bodies quit
producing the lactase enzyme when the need for it has passed, that is,
bodies don't waste energy producing enzymes to deal with foods no
longer available.  Most of my cats can deal with half and half
(milk/cream) and they love it - some of them ignore it.  However, most
of them also use the great outdoors as their litter pan, so I don't
necessarily see the evidence of indigestion.

If you *want* to give your cat milk, then buy cat milk in the pet shop.
Otherwise water is fine or about once in a week (coffee)cream diluted with
water about 1/2 and 1/2.
