I got one through ebay that I LOVED.. and the cats are pretty keen on it
too. They have a website, http://www.armarkat.com/. they are pretty
inexpensive considering what is sold at the local stores and on fosters and
smith. You can find some really good deals on cat trees on ebay.

I'm tempted to try to build one myself (like in a Malcolm in the
Middle episode). My biggest fear would be I spend a bunch of money
and the cat won't be interested. She already sort of has a cat tree -
I've got "old school" speakers (big ones) for my stereo, and when she
jumps up on the higher one, she's 5 feet off the ground.
But compared to what I've seen elsewhere, the prices aren't too bad.
This one looks tempting:

But I'll check ebay too.

No Problem.
It is the place that actually makes them for all the Petsmart and Petco
stores here in the valley. The company is called "Cats are in" and are
located at Rose Garden Lane and 19th Ave, just beside a large Honeywell
facility near Deer Valley airport. It might be a bit of a drive for
you but the savings are worth it.
The last time I was there I purchase two 6 foot trees for about 55% of
what Petsmart charges.
It is cash only and they will take you out into the warehouse and let
you pick the tree yourself.

True. That area does seem to have a lot of them within a 5 mile radius.

See previous reply, I will never buy a tree from Petsmart or Petco again

I have two cat trees that I bought from www.createacatcondo.com ("Molly and
Friends"). Each tree has four tiers. The first tree has 3 beds with raised
edges and an enclosed upright tunnel as the bottom tier. The second one has
beds with raised edges on all 4 levels I wanted beds with raised edges (or
"lips") because I didn't want to take any chances that Duffy would lose his
orientation and possibly roll off the side (especially when asleep). I
highly recommend this company and their products. It is a small,
family-owned company; and they will build completely to your specifications.
The trees are exceptionally sturdy and well-built, and they come completely
assembled. One of mine weighs 85 pounds and the other weighs 90 pounds --
which means they will not topple over, but you should also have your space
selected before delivery so it can be put into place and not need to be
moved around. If you go to their web site, you will find an interactive page
where you will be able to "build" your tree on-site and learn the exact
price for your configuration. The listed price *includes* shipping, and that
is a big "plus" when doing comparison shopping, especially for heavy items
like this. The various commercial pet stores I have visited don't have
anything that even begins to compare in quality. Many of theirs use heavy
cardboard tubes. Mine is made of solid wood, and each of the poles is bolted
firmly to the beds. You also will have a choice of how the poles should be
covered. I had one pole (the second-lowest) on each tree wrapped in sisal so
it can serve as a scratching post. I had the others covered in carpet. You
could also choose polished wood without carpeting, and that would be
adequate for Holly because she can easily leap from one bed to another. The
carpeting is important for Duffy, though, because he cannot see and
therefore needs to *climb* up and down the poles. The carpet gives him
traction for climbing. Incidentally, he truly loves these cat trees! Both
cats use them a lot, but especially Duffy.
If you decide to order, I suggest that you call the company directly and
give your order over the phone. They are very personable, can answer any
questions you have, and will also make personalized adjustments if you have
special requests. For example, I had one of my trees built one foot higher
than their normal configuration, and they also made an extra pole to go
outside the edge of the highest bed so Duffy could always find his way back
down.
Here are links to 3 pictures that show the 2 cat trees I tried to describe.
The first two show Duffy on the new tree, and the third one shows Holly and
Duffy together on the original tree.

Very nice, but also very expensive.
The site someone else mentioned seemed much more reasonable in price
and they include free shipping in the continental US.
They might not be quite as well built though - it's hard to tell from
websites.
I have a couple of sisal scratching posts which shed staples
occasionally - any problems with that on yours?

Yes, they are fairly expensive -- but they are *very* well-built. My first
"edition" is a couple of years old and looks brand-new. I have a friend who
has had one for approximately 10 years. These trees are all solid wood and
seem impervious to wear (whereas most of the commercial ones use a heavy
cardboard-type and/or pressed wood tube), and I can't even *see* any staples
anywhere on the product -- certainly, none have ever come loose. They are
also heavy enough so that there is no possibility that cats playing at the
top could "rock" one of them and cause it to topple.

About cat trees: whatever it is, I think there has to be a hammock or a
sleeping mould.
This is what my cats are interested in.
