You can't take them with you on walks!
Or can you?

I have a neighbor that takes his big retrievers out for an
evening walk after supper and I have seen on of their cats
follow right along with the dogs and take a tour of the
neighborhood.

My experience is "no".
It seems like each cat has it's little "known zone" that is zero upon arrival in
a new home, and very gradually expands as the cat comes to know an
ever-increasing circle of space.
Outside of that zone, they become extremely uneasy - frightened, even.
Before I had any practical experience, I allowed my grandaughter go cajole me
into letting her take her cat to the local park. This thing was utterly
terrified the whole time. I finally caught on and we cut it short. Never
again.
YMMV

My mother is cat sitting for some friends who are visiting family out of
state. Tom, (yes I know it is so original), who gets excited when mom picks
up the leash and he knows he is going to get to go outside for a walk. So
I think you can take them on walks.

Mine - some of them anyway - go for walks with me, but we stay on my
property. However, that doesn't mean that all the cats with me me
already know the entire property - they trust me and may put up loud
objections, but they generally prefer to be with me that alone at
home.
A few years ago I photographed one of the walks:

I have to go for a walk with my cats daily. They will call me out to do so.
They love to go down to the lake after they've been fed then back past the
house and to the end of the road. This is in the morning as well as in the
evening.

Nanki Poo likes the occasional walk. Quango RB used to insist on
them.

I am always here, but post rarely.
Nanki Poo has a slight recurrent breathing problem which requires an
injection every two months or so.
However, his main problem in life is a small furry thing called Minke
who treats him as a pillow.

If I lived in a (semi-)rural area, sure, if away from roadways.
All the cats I've tried putting a leash on go ballistic, though.

My guess about the posts in which the cats take walks with the owner is that the
walk is within the cat's "known zone".
My daughter raises horses and has quite a few acres. Their half-dozen or so
cats range far and wide.
We live in suburbia. So far our cat's territory doesn't seem to extend much
beyond the neighbor's yard.
OTOH, the neighbor's cat got injured by a car (picked up off the road by a
motorist...) at least a half mile away - and it was crossing the road from the
far side...so it's "known zone" must be quite extensive.

I live in an apartment, and when I first got my kitten I bought a leash
for her to take her outside. But every time I took her outside, all
she wanted to do was eat the grass and climb under the shrubs; she had
no interest in walking with me and I gave up after seven or eight tries.

Please forgive, but I never understood using a leash on a cat.
That and clothes for dogs....
Me.

I do! The ones that want to go anyway :) I live in an apartment so I
taught them young to walk on a leash and a harness - except Ivy who is so
fascinated with the dog that she just follows her wherever she goes!

I can't even get my cat, Bailey, to go down the hall without a fight. I
don't know how I'm gonna get him moved into my new apartment down the
hall

LOL! *My* Bailey would look at me as if to say, "Ya wanna go down the
hall? OK, let's go!" The only thing he doesn't like is a late dinner. :-)
