Quality food from mass-market vendors?

I recall reading in one of these forums that one of the mass market
brands, possibly Friskies but I am not sure, has recently improved the
quality greatly.

I went to a store and tried to locate the new product. However, all
Friskies cans I saw, and a few other inexpensive brands I checked, had
"by-products" as first or second ingredient.

Is the new product being sold only through certain stores? I would
appreciate any information.

I vaguely recall it being fancy feast (aka kitty krack) was the company
that improved their formulations.

Yes. Now in many flavors, "beef" or "chicken" are the first
ingredient, whereas before it was byproducts. Tender Beef Feast is a good one
as is Salmon Feast. They are both ground foods.

Thanks. I'll look into it.

Has anyone tried the one that is specifically for 'finicky cats'?  My older
feline is a fussy eater and I thought I might try that one for her.

I feed my cats Fancy Feast all the time. They seem to really love it. The
tender beef feast looks like real pieces of beef in gravy. The tuna slices
does too. It also has the highest % of protein in cat food I've seen. They
also really like the ocean whitefish.

Checked Petmart today. Unlike most other brands, which come in cans of
varying sizes, FF seems to come in small 3 oz cans only. They were 42
cents. A pack of 24 was $9.99, about 41.6 cents, some volume discount!
Anyway I got a few cans for my cat to try out.

I know, it sucks - I wish it would come in bigger cans and ;you get a better
discount for volume.  My four are eating 4 cans a day already and I'm trying
to increase their canned food and decrease their dry food, so I'm looking at
even higher costs in the future.  FF is about .46 cents per 3 oz. can here.
I'm hoping they'll get up to 8 cans a day so that's $3.68 every day (which,
I guess if you think about it, is still less than one happy meal! ;>).

What are the best quality brands one can get in 14-16 oz cans?

Not 14-16 oz, but Trader Joe's house brand offers good value in
common 5.5-6 oz size. The ingredient list reads great, the prices are
39-49 c, compared with 69-79 c for more famous premium brands.
Just discovered a few days ago.

42 cents is a pretty good price. I get them for 41 cents at Walmart. My
supermarket charges over 50 cents a can.
I also feed my 3 furbabies 9-lives, which they eat, but not as happily as
they eat fancy feast.

I feed my cat the store brand FF, half of the time she will vomit name
brand FF. Maybe try Whiskas in a pouch, some of it is real juicy.

I have six that like FF plus they like the Sheba also.

I feed them FF at night like when they eat they main meal then for their morning meal I
give them a variety of canned which includes 9 Lives, Whiskas, Sheba, ETC.  That way they
do not get really set on any particular brand even though they prefer FF.  Trying to plan
ahead since I am in my 60s and the furbabies are all like 3 - 4 years old except one that
is 12.  When someone else takes them when I am gone, which hopefully they will, they may
not get fed like I do (The pricey stuff) so then it will not be that bad on them if they
start getting like 9 Lives or such.

Pet Smart does have their Pet Smart card here now which often gives you a discount on
Fancy Feast.

I e-mailed Fancy Feast a while back and they said if there was a big enough demand they
would consider making Fancy Feast in a larger can.

If and when Fancy Feast comes in larger cans, people will probably
just switch to Iams rather then spend the $80 a can FF will cost.

As an alternative suggestion, look at Trader Joes. I looked at
ingredient list and price, and it seems like a great value.
