Cats Meow - 20 Jun 2005 02:56 GMT
I had to feed the neighbors cat this weekend and he makes the strangest
sounds, not quite a meow, he vocalizes in vocal phrase that is
spit/purr/eeeuiiii all together, or just a eeeuiiii. Is there something that
causes a cat not to meow right? I have some suspicion he may be diseased,
but I'm not sure. He is about a 1 year old intact male, and the very strange
neighbor lady refuses to have him fixed, only because he's not spraying and
wants him to sow his oats. My inside only cat hates him, he's really weird
like she is and I'm tempted to take him to a shelter.
I've seen and heard other cats that don't meow right and wonder if there is
something really wrong with them. Anybody know?

4 cats; they all sound different; one meows, one grunts, one mrr?s and
one squeaks; take your pick.

I've got two cats. One has a multitude of meows grunts and rolling gurrrs
and comes up with new ones all the time. The other cat never meows, just
kind of groans in different pitches, communicates more with looks, teeth,
posture and such. Ask the owner if that's normal for that cat.

Strange person gets greeted with a strange meow LOL

Nothing wrong at all! There are about 50 (or more?) different types of meow.
I hear 15 of them alone in my own household.

I would have the SPCA send this person material regarding their neutering
program and why it is so important.  If it annoys her, so what; she can get
somebody else to feed it.

My guess that the strange mewoing is the result of combinational stress
due to separation from owner plus desire to breed, as he's not fixed
(big mistake, I have to add). Tomcats can be very talkative anyway and
given the circumstances ("I want to go out to meet girls, but instead
they left me alone in the closed house") this 'combinational' meowing
could be a sign of complaining when somebody visits him.

Cheers,

Alex

No, he just has a weird meow, and she leaves a window open for him,
she claims he says "mama".
I've tried talking her into neutering him, even offered to loan her
the money, she flat out says no. Hopefully when he starts spraying in
her already filthy house she'll do something. She is a drug addict and
has dirty clothes piled 4 feet high in every chair, table, the sofa
and floor. I don't know what else I can do.
Would catnapping and taking him to the pound be immoral in this
circumstance? If he ever disappears surely she will blame me, I don't
want to be a bad guy.

no comment, except that at 1 year old if he ain't spraying her house
already he probably won't (and no matter what the laundry smells like,
you'd know if a cat's been spraying).

Have you considered helping *her* ?
(okay, a little comment)

If it were me, I'd maybe "disappear" him (maybe if she's away for a
couple of days?), take him to the vet and get him done (it's a very
quick procedure).  I'd consider it a public service.  She may well not
even realise it has happened, the incisions are often so tiny!
