rdy2retire - 13 Jun 2005 04:43 GMT Hello all,
My daughter's cat just had kittens today. There are 4 of them and they are SOOO adorable!
My question is, I know that new mom's need lots of food and water while nursing kittens but do they need some type of vitamins as well? My daughter's not a rich person and can't just take kitty to the vet for vitamins. Is there a reasonable substitute for the vet's vitamins that I could buy for them?
Thanks.
M.C. Mullen - 13 Jun 2005 05:49 GMT : Hello all, : [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] : : Thanks. You can get reasonable cat vitamins in every pet shop, just check if there's not too much sugar in them. Tablets or paste works well. Feed the mom cat milk and kitten dry food and any amount of canned food she wants. The kittens and the mother will need wormed when they are 3 weeks old. And then again 3 weeks later. You don't have to bring them to the vet for that, but he can give you the meds and tell you how to use it.
What colour are the kittens? What will you do with them?

rdy2retire - 13 Jun 2005 12:19 GMT Two of them are dark gray with some white markings and 2 of them look black with white paws. If I had my digital camera, I would take pics of them and send them, but I don't have it yet. My daughter's planning to keep one for herself, but I think she'll be giving the other 3 away. I can't take one, my hubby won't let me. :-( I joked with MY cat last night that if the kittens are as loveable as their mother, my cat would have to find a new home. She's not loveable at all most of the time. However, she won't give them away until they're at least 3 months old.
How do you tell if they're male or female, or is that up to a vet?
Thanks for the help.

I try with the computer:
Male: o Female: o l °
Where do you find homes for the little ones? Through the paper? Beware of lab people! Don't hesitate to ask questions about the future homes!

That doesn't work well. Kittens don't have prominent 'features' like a puppy or a regular male human would. LOL!

I've never had problems... I guess it helped that all the batches before we got the queens spayed always had both male and female... also, IIRC I couldn't be bothered checking before they're old enough (out of the "rat" stage and actually looking like kittens).

Maggie's Mom - 13 Jun 2005 23:36 GMT >> How do you tell if they're male or female, or is that up to a vet? > > umm... pick up kitten, turn kitten over. actually it is not that easy. On Aug. 5, 2003 I became a grandmother to 3 adorable kittens, and for quite a while I (and many other cat "experts" thought that we were blessed with three females. Yes, we picked kittens up, turned them over...
Before the testicles descend, the "boys" look very much like "girls".
Now the "boys" are all grown up (and fixed), and we have classic (green) tabby Theodore the firstborn, gray tabby Alexander the middle son, and jet black Napoleon the last in queue. I thought I was going to give them all away, but then... oh, well, they were so adorable that I could not bear the thought of giving them up. Teddy and Nappy and their mom Screechie reside with my daughter, and Alexander shares my humble abode with orange tabby Pestka.
Sorry for the digression. Please check with a vet or a real "cat expert" and do tell us: boys or girls?

Maggie's Mom - 14 Jun 2005 22:20 GMT A green tabby. Like this one: http://www.angelfire.com/bc/cn/images/taken/Anika.jpg. Only more "forest green", i.e: darker. Hopefully I will be able to access my photo page anytime soon, so I can post a link to the original pic. As it is, I had to "borrow" a pic of a cat with similar coloration.
Don't you agree that "green" describes this color the best?

I am starting with a green tabby: http://www.snapfish.com/slideshow/AlbumID=10845674/PictureID=213055626/t_=8726711. Really, he is even greener in real life.
:o) Maggie's Mom Hope it works. BTW is there a way to post a picture of a cat?

My cat had 5 kittens. And there is one with a bummed up tail. My mom asked about how to tell if they are male and female because my boyfriend and I can't tell for sure what is what yet, being as we have never had kittens before. Was there a specific reason someone asked what I will be doing with the kittens? If your interested in one and are in the areayou can email my mom and she'll tell me. Brandi

It's best to feed the mom kitten food. It is richer and has more of the nutrients she needs right now. Since it is so much richer, switch her over gradually so she doesn't get digestive problems. She will eat a lot right now, I felt like the mom was eating for 6! We didn't give her any extra vitamins.
As for sexing the kittens, I read some websites and actually got our kittens sexes right when they were about a week old. The boys rear parts look more like a colon, and the 2 holes are farther apart (the testicles will grown in-between them.) The females' openings are closer together, and will eventually start to look like a upside-down exclamation point. Here is a website about it: http://www.kitten-rescue.com/sexing_the_kitten.html
Good luck with the kittens,
Rhonda
