I know that carnivore excrement is a nono, but does anyone know of a way
of treating it such that it could be used in compost safely ?

    Build a soil ingestor.  :)

I've been using mine for a while now, and it's worked well for
me.

I like it; neat and simple... what do you use for kitty litter; does
that digest effectively as well?

thankyou,

I use World's Best both because the cats love it and because
it breaks down too.  However, unless you're building a very big
ingestor, don't dump the whole box into the ingestor -- I just put the
clumps and feces in.  I have a 'herb and vegetable' composter and a
'flower' composter.  I put the used (but not clumpy) litter in the
'flower' composter and play it extremely safe with the 'edible'
composter.
You could probably use Swheat Scoop in the ingestor too.  I
wouldn't do clay -- you'd just be encouraging clayey soil.

yeah, that was basically the issue... the yard isn't big enough to
support a couple years worth of clay chips; thanks Orchid.
