I went to Washington, D.C. for four days last week. I generally have no
problem leaving my kitty, Butterscotch, alone for a night or two on the
weekend if I go out of town. She doesn't mess up the house and seems to be
fine when I get back. But I couldn't even think to leave her alone for 4
days so I took her to my vet who does boarding service. My cat actually
likes the ladies in the office. They keep the cats in separate large
"cages" with a kitty condo, bed, litter box, and food/water. They're
actually pretty big so I feel ok with it. They also let them out to wander
the office area during the day and the staff plays with them. So I had not
qualms about leaving her there since I knew she'd have companionship all
day. The ladies at the office said she was a sweetheart and did lots of lap
sitting and purring. But when I got her home she was more attached to me
than she has been since I first got her as a kitten. She hasn't left my
site for a moment. She usually comes and goes from me when I get home from
work and sometimes sits on the bathroom floor when I get ready in the
mornings. But for the last 4 days she has been on my lap or following me
and licking my hand 24/7! She even peered in the shower this morning, around
the curtain. I hope she wasn't feeling abandoned when I was gone! I love
all the extra bonding time, but I'm starting to feel guilty that she was
feeling too lonely while I was gone! So what's your vote...lonely or just
glad to be home again? Have any of your cats had this response? It's
almost like she's making sure I know she loves me so I won't go away again.

That sounds familiar! My first cat, Goblin, used to give me the cold
shoulder the first couple of hours after returning from a trip then
follow it with days of love. I figured he wanted to make his point that
he was mad at me for leaving but so very glad I came back.
I haven't left my new kitty at all, except for work, but I have a
feeling he would be all loves and by my side when I got home.

Both - and a hint to think about getting her a playmate ...

She was probably thinking you weren't coming back, with taking her to the
new surroundings.
She's probably needing extra reassurance for a while... You know how we
humans react when we think we lost someone, and then they turn up back and
allright, makes us want to hug and smother them for a while. Especially if
it was a kid or a parent or a spouse or someone with whom we have a close
bond.
