Howdy folks,

I've always wondered about cats when they are kneading things like our
favourite blanket, my best shirt, and best of all bare skin...

They are always happy when they do this, are thay actually trying to fluf
up their "bed", or is this just a subliminal reaction to being in a good
mood?

Being in a good mood, feeling warm and fuzzy and friendly.
Little kittens 'knead' like that when they suckle form their mom.
It's a good thing.

They are remembering the happy days of their childhood when they
kneaded their mommy's tummy to make her milk flow. It's a sign that
all's well in their world.

We call it "mushing," and if your cat(s) mush on you, it means they
feel comfortable and safe. It's what kits do when they are trying to
stimulate more milk from the MomCat when they are still nursing, so it
means in adults that the mushing one thinks of you as Mom. And this is
a good thing. I love it when my cats mush on me!

Thanks for everyone who responded, the stimulate milk thing I had not
thought of.  I was sure they were happy, I just wish they would do it when
I'm wearing a crummy shirt, not the nice ones :)

Thanks again.

They also like certain smells, the ones that may contain some musk. They
often love male armpits ;), and it gets them in a kneading mood. They may
like certain musk perfumes, as long as they're not too strong or too
chemical smelling.

I think then they're little and nursing, a pile of kittens on mother cats
tummy must smell similar. Maybe it's the pheromones.
