cat bites

Hello Everyone,

My two cats got into a tangle, and now one of them is favoring her hind leg.
I've looked at it and there isn't much of a cut, but there is one break in
the skin which might be a bite.  My question is this:  how serious is a cat
bite on a cat?  Is it as bad as when a cat bites a human?  I am trying to
contact the vet... but my money is practically at zero.  Can any of you
share your experiences with me?

Thanks

Cats have all sorts of nasty stuff in their mouth.  Swab with Bactine or
something regularly; if she's still limping after a few days, take her
to the vet; she may have pulled the leg out of the hip socket.

Thanks for your advice, Pat.

Somehow I got referred to this page
http://www.sniksnak.com/cathealth/fight-wounds.html  and it was very
helpful.  My cat's wound suppurated out of the tiny bite mark, and though I
am sure she was a bit uncomfortable when I put H2O2 on it, she is such a
docile cat that treating her was really not a problem.

Everyone on this list would be so jealous if they could meet this new
adoptee cat.  I have named her Twyla Spike (she was found wearing a pink
spiked collar).  She is the most gentle cat I have ever encountered!  After
dealing with my first cat who is a holy terror, Twyla is just a cream puff!

again thanks for your helps

Hope she gets better soon... watch the wound to make sure it doesn't abcess.

I am caring for her wound with the same diligence I am giving to the bite
the cat gave me on my hand.... except cats aren't too keen on bandages!

Hi rpl,

That sniksnak site helped me very much.  Twyla is doing great.  I squeezed
some junky stuff out of her wound yesterday, and disinfected with alcohol
and hydrogen peroxide. Today her foot is not swollen, she is not even
favoring it.

I feel sorry for my other cat, Arlo, who has been my baby up until now.  But
he has had a big problem with biting--biting ME--for several years now.  I
can't really snuggle with him... I can't trust that he won't haul off and
bite me for no reason at all.  I have put a lot of thought into it.  I am
now trying to make him an outdoor cat, because to give up a cat that bites
is essentially having him put to sleep.  I go out and find him outside, and
pet him and scratch his face... I hope we all can make the adjustment.

Thanks for all your advice, guys!

Is Arlo neutered?
My tom bites too, but only if I play rough, touch his tummy or get him
agitated when I stroke him.
So it's basically my fault. If I'm gentle, he is too. I can even brush him
now, and he likes to lie in top of me if I scratch his cheeks.

Your bitey cat... is he declawed?

No.  Bitey is both Clawey and Bitey.  I did manage with great stealth to get
his nails clipped about a week ago.  He's been "nicer" lately... well, the
closer truth is that I know when to jump out of his way in time."  I love
him, and he still comes up to me for love when I sit outside (so far I have
done this every day.)

Scratching posts have been known to deter cats from scratching the
furniture.  Many posters in here have posted that to deter cats from
scratching people to play with them with a toy instead of barehanded;
also to make a high-pitched mewling when they get too rough.

I think that's a big part of cat ownership

Can anybody give some hints on how to get a cat to use a scratching post?

spray/rub with catnip

and if you notice the cat dangling from the sofa/curtains/your leg,
unhook it and attach it to the post.

ROTFLMAO!!!

Oh the picture that came to mind. Calling cat look down and start for a
second, at the sight of the cat dangling from one claw. Unhooking it and
walking over to the post and hanging it there. oh I can not even think.

The first cat I had "adopted" me in this manner.  I said "Oh! A stray
kitty!" and brought him into my kitchen and fed him some leftover roast beef
that I had (I was completely ignorant of what I was doing).  the second day
I was curious to see if he would do the same thing, he seemed like such a
good boy!  The third day, when I came home from work, he was hanging from
the screen door, two-thirds of the way up, like a moth heading for the
light!  And he was my cat after that for the rest of his life.
