Clumping. No contest; the clay stuff looks cheap but you have to change
it every couple days, whereas with the clumping you just remove the
clumps and top up (and change it every couple weeks)
I keep meaning to try the organic kinds (more expensive but you can
flush or put in the compost or something) but haven't gotten around to
it yet.

I think I was about the last cat owner to give up on clay litter and
try clumping. I could not *believe* the difference. Less odor, needs to
be changed *much* less often. In view of the fact that it lasts so much
longer, I don't think it's any more expensive to use than clay litter.
You don't have to haul those heavy litter bags in as often. Also, the
bottom of the litterbox doesn't get so yukky because liquid is absorbed
before it gets to the plastic.
I just use TidyCat, sometimes TidyCat with crystals. I tried Fresh
Step, and it was too perfumey and too dusty. There are many premium
brands, other people may have some better suggestions for you.

Hard clumping scoopable. I recommend Tidy cat, The blue kind. I tried the
crystals and was not happy. Tried the Red was not happy. Oh it clumped all
right but the odor control was not there.

I love Swheat Scoop. It's all-natural wheat-based clumping litter with
excellent odor control. I have five litterboxes filled with SS, and I
scoop once a day, and dump and completely wash once every few weeks. The
website is www.swheatscoop.com - there's some interesting info on there
regarding the chemicals in clumping clay litter.

My mom & I use Scoop Away. Anything else our cats won't use the litter box;
besides that seems to clump well.

Arm and Hammer scoopable - no dust, no bad odor, a 30 lb. box lasts for
5 months (one cat)- wouldn't change for anything.

I use the same litter. Works well. Subtract about 4 months from the
claim of how long it lasts. I have to buy a new box each month.
(And this is for one cat.)

Call me a bad mommy, but I don't toss the whole boxful weekly - I just
keep topping it off and use every bit in the supply. I guess you are
tossing some? My frugal bone won't let me, and the cat hasn't
complained yet.

I don't toss it either. I Keep about 3 inches of litter in each box.
(Each cat has two boxes). Topping it off to keep 3 inches of litter
exhuasts the supply.

In a month, one 15 kg (large) box (clumping) will fill the tray 4x so I
just scoop/topup on a daily basis, fully replace on a weekly basis and
wash the tray monthly... total cost $7/mo. (4 cats).

Geno, if you're reading this thread, what do you use ?

We use litter from Sam's Club. The brand name is "Litter Clean" and
the label says: "Scented Scoopable Cat Litter with Baking Soda."
Ingredients: Ground Clay, Baking Soda, Deodorizing System.
It's granular in nature, comes in 40lb. reusable square buckets
with tight sealing lids, which are themselves, worth half the $8.00
or so the stuff costs. Our cat is a dry feed cat and drinks a lot of
water and so, pees a lot. It seems to last a long time and is the
best we could find.

I went from World's Best to Swheat Scoop to Scoop Away (Multi-Cat &
Fresh Scent) to Ever Clean (Unscented Extra Strength) and I like Ever
Clean the best. Ever Clean is Clorox's premium scoopable clay litter
(the other two brands are Scoop Away and Fresh Step). I also add some
kitty litter treatment I got from Drs Foster & Smith to help with
long-term odor & bacteria.
I didn't like World's Best because of the overwhelming odor that would
manifest itself after only a few days. Swheat Scoop had good odor
control but wasn't good at absorbing & clumping -- urine would pool
and stick to the bottom of the box. I didn't like Scoop Away because
the Fresh Scent version couldn't control odor worth a darn and the
scent of the Multi-Cat version was so overwhelming it would get all
over my cats and was just disgusting.
Maybe Clorox is just suckering me by pushing me to their premium line
(costs ~2x), but I really like Ever Clean right now. I've yet to try
other brands such as Tidy Cats or Arm & Hammer.

I go to Home Depot, or any bigger home improvement store and buy a concrete
mixing vat/tub (small), It's about 1.5' by 2.5' and about 8" deep and works
perfect for my 2 large cats. The vat is only 2.99 to 4.99, and very sturdy
thick plastic, pretty resistant to clawing. I usually get 2 at the time, and
replace them about every 3 months when they get stinky.
Much better and much cheaper than any 'litter boxes'.
With a nice large sandbox like that, the messes and over the fence
accident's are almost zero.
