Hi my name is Jaci (pronounced Jackie), My cat sassy is not meowing right.
She tries to meow but when she does nothing comes out. Why would she not
be able to meow?

She was taken too soon from her mom. It falls to you know
to teach her how to meow. Just meow to her as correctly and
often as you can. You should see results in a couple of
weeks. Dont get discouraged!

You should have her checked, but my Spooky was almost completely
silent for almost ten years. He started meowing - quietly and seldom -
only after we moved to the country.

But was Spooky trying?

His mouth would open and air would come out, but no sound ... or at
least nothing loud enough for me to hear. Sometimes I thought I heard
a faint "eh eh eh" sound but I could never be sure.
Last night I realized that Tigger is also mostly silent - he came to
me in the bed and I was going through the process of identifying which
cat it was by touch and had almost decided it was him, then he made an
"Ach" kind of sound and I completely lost the identification ... then
I realized that was the first sound I had ever heard from him.

Rex will do this occasionally. I asked the vet cause I thought maybe Rex was
having an anxiety attack or something. She said a lot of cats do this when
exposed to a new object, person or situation. It's their way of really
'taking it in', inhaling whatever smell there was, kind of like, 'taking in
the situation'. Maybe that's what it is.

This morning I decided to lie in ... Micky came at 5.30 and lamented so
badly that the whole household woke up.
He is so vocal that we just call him 'The Meow'.
I must say I'd rather have a silent cat ...

How old is the cat?
I think it's just a low meow. Cindy is like that, but when she was in heat
she surprised everyone with her organ. First I thought it was the tom, but
then I realised that it's her robbing my sleep.

I have 7 cats all together, and 4 are sister's. All from a feral cat we
have been trying to catch her to spay her, but she's just to smart! 2 from
the same litter, 1 from the previous litter, and one from the very first
litter. In all there about 2 year about in age. The youngest 2 are 8
months old. Anyway, none of them can meow. Sometimes a squeak will comes
out, but usually they open there mouths and nothing comes out. The vet says
it's normal. Some cats just don't meow for some reason. Some of there
litter mates meow, but not mine. My other 3 cats are very vocal on the
other hand and can hold conversations with you!

LOL! I'm sure if they felt they had something worth saying, they would!

We got three cats, semi-feral, and two of them don't meow, just
squeak but it is very endearing. I wonder if there isn't a lot of truth
to the idea that they need to be taught, but they've been around
several other cats that do meow and they haven't learned in a couple
of years.

I think that may bed true about hissing. We had two cats, neither of whom
ever hissed. When we added another who did hiss, both of the first two
learned to hiss.

I have 4 cats; 2 meow, 1 warbles (constantly) and the last just squeaks.
If it's a new thing and Sassy was meowing before, I'd take her to the vet.

My kitten Delany (5 1/2 months old) doesn't meow either. She will
sometimes open her mouth as if she was going to speak, but all that
comes out is an "eh" sound.
I adopted her at about 8 weeks from a local rescue shelter, and she was
spayed/neutered at 10 weeks. She was born at the shelter, her mother
was given to the shelter while pregnant.
I know her voice +can+ work, because early on she'd literally get
underfoot while I was in the kitchen.
