Cat being beaten up on by other cat - what can I do?

Hi everyone.

My cat Lenny has just come home covered in vicious scratches and cuts.
I've only just taken him to the vet the other day for a puncture near
his eye.  This other cat is bigger than Lenny and beating him to a pulp.
Lenny is used to being an inside/outside cat and he likes to defend
his territory.  I wish I could keep him inside all the time but he'd go
insane, I'm sure of it.

Anyway, Lenny being beaten in these stoushes is really depressing him
and, obviously, he's ending up injured.

What can I do about this?  I just don't know what I can do to help him.
I'm going to go talk to the other cat's owners as soon as my Dad gets
home (he knows who the cat belongs to).

It's a very nice cat and all but it's making me incredibly angry and
upset and costing me a LOT of money!  Mainly I'm pissed because he's
hurting my little boy!

It would be good to talk the other owner into neutering his cat!

My neutered old tom didn't know he wasn't supposed to be a macho cat.
He was always eager to face down any cat that ventured into his
territory. One fight cost me $200 - mostly because I thought he'd been
hit by a car and broke his leg. Turns out they often get bit in a
nerve in the shoulder and will limp BADLY for 10 days or so. I think
neutering a tom may prevent widespread roaming, but it doesn't seem to
discourage their fighting inclinations.

I think he and one big old tom cat did arrive at some sort of
understanding though, and they left each other alone. I don't know how
long that process might have taken.

My male kitten was similarly beaten by a big stray tom. Whenever I heard
them fighting, I ran out, and chased the stray very hard, throwing apples
at him :) Eventually, he stopped coming around. Do the same.

Why apples? <grin> a water hose would help too!

Just the good old hosepipe will work as well and not as painfull as a apple
in the cats face, Or for something more mobile a water gun.

I did.  God it felt good to spray him right in the face with the hose.
Poor Lenny is incredibly depressed.  The whole family is upset about
it.  *sigh*

Hi Nancy,

I had a cat like that.  He kept getting beaten up,  He finally died from
it.  Your cat may survive, but stands a good chance of getting killed. If
you really want to help your cat, keep him in the house.  He is just
following his instincts and will probably keep getting in fights.  He is
neutered, right?

Good luck.

He needs to be an indoors only cat. My two (Xedo and Fray D) were
in/outdoor cats until I moved into this house which is on a busy
street. I knew I could never live with the guilt if I had to go scrape
one or both of them off the asphalt with a shovel, so they are now
indoors-only cats. They don't seem to have had too much problem
adjusting to it (I've been here five years now). They have lots of
play toys, fresh catnip, yaddayadda, and they both are healthy, social
kiddens.

Please keep Lenny inside. He'll adjust.

Allison

It's so much harder when one of your own cats
is beating up another. I feel bad because the beater
is really just scared. She lived with a pit bull and some
aggressive cats and has learned to be on the defense
almost all of the time. She starts to bit me about a
dozen times a day but stops short when she realizes
it's me and rolls over, some times.
