Hi Eric--if I understand your post correctly, the cat is just lying by
your door? If so, I don't understand what kind of "mess" he would make.
Cats, by nature, won't poop or pee where they nap,you shouldn't have a
problem with that kind of mess. The only thing I can think of is, cats
are supposed to hate citrus. You could try spraying a citrus scent
there. Also, those clear carpet runners with the plastic
"spikes"..they're not enough to hurt the cat, but might discourage it
to another nap spot. Just cut a piece of it and lay it upside down in
front of your door.

That could be a problem because the bottom that was one the top for that
thing will slide. He could cause an accident for himself or someone else.
Double sided tape might help. Either to use on the mat or place on the
ground.

Double sided tape works great - I've found cats really hate it and used it
to train mine not to sit in inappropriate places (like where three doors
meet for example, or on top of the TV etc....
