Momma cat doesn't like her kittens now

A stray I found had 4 kittens last August so they are 8 months now. She was
a great mom and they nursed till they were probably 2 1/2 months and she let
them.

But now she hisses and growls at the 2 boys and one girl, but still grooms
and sleeps w/the other girl. I feel so sorry for the other three, they seem
so confused when she hisses at them. Any ideas why?

She also sometimes just walks around growling. Last night she was the only
cat in the basement w/me and she just kept growling. It increases a lot when
I open the windows and she can smell outside. She acts like she got a mental
problem. She's still likes us humans though. Weird.

Her job is over and she's probably just letting everyone know it. ;-)

Has she been spayed? For info visit this page:

Yes, she got spayed ASAP after kittens. All the kittens are spayed/neutered
too.

That's great that you had her spayed. At least we can eliminate that as a
problem.

In this case I think she's probably just had enough of the kittens now.

Kudos to you for doing the right thing and making sure there will be
many, many less unwanted cats. Wonderful.

We also had a stray that had kittens last year. I noticed that even now,
at just a year old, the mom is sometimes distant from the kittens. We
haven't experienced what you have -- the hissing and growling, but she
many times wants to feel separate from the kittens.

They on the other hand, still recognize her as mom, and always try to
clump up against her. She is okay with it most of the time, but doesn't
seek them out like they do to her. She is curled up with one of the
kittens more than the others.

Hope this is just a phase for your cat. Are there any new dogs of any
other animals in the area? Have you petted another animal and then come
in to the house?

Good luck,

Rhonda
