That is normal for many cats - some ignore it. However, they almost
all ignore it unless it is damaged (crushed leaf, broken stem, etc.).
I used to have a couple of serious druggies who forced me to grow it
in hanging posts. There are a number of plants growing wild outside
now and the cats I have now ignore the plants - it's so strong that
even when crushed, it repels them until it has had a day or so to
weaken. Curiously, the two biggest plants are in the least promising
place: in the crack between the asphalt driveway and the concrete
patio.

I'd worry if your cat took a liking to your pot plants. LOL
Not at all! My neighbour's cat would liberally help himself to the catnip I grow in my flowerbed. :) Many cats love it fresh off the plant. Some prefer it dried and crumbled, and some like it both ways.
If your cat is indoor-only, and does not get any other fresh greens, he may be using this as a source of greenery and that is why he chews it all the way down right away.
Try growing a pot of wheat grass or oat grass alongside the catnip for him if this is the case.
I bought a large bag of oat seed at a local "feed, gardening, and pet" supply store. It was only about 2$ and it has lasted me forever. (I've had it at least 3 or 4 years already - - I sow it pretty thick, and it germinates in about a week. Needless to say, I keep it away from the cats until it is long enough - - - about 6 inches - - that one bite doesn't decimate it. You might want to try that with the catnip, too, put it up where he can't get at it until it is "big enough to defend itself a little" *G*)
I hope some of this helps, at least a little!
Good luck!

We tried the oat grass a while ago & he wasn't the least bit interested in it. We live in Florida & the type of grass that's grown here doesn't agree with him. He'll eat it but within 5 minutes he'll throw it back up. This never happened when we lived up north. I'll just have to let the catnip grow a little more before I let him at it.
