OK, in further efforts to get Rexie to exercies Saturday I went out and
bought one of the little laser pointers. He loved it - jumping and leaping .
. . for about half a day.  Then he figured it out. I don't know if it was
the click when you turn it on and off or not. Oh, he's still interested in
WATCHING it flit about here and there.

But he knows WE'RE DOING IT!  And it's like it's now below him to leap for
our pleasure!

Did you forget how intelligent cats can be? Mine had it figured out in
about 5 seconds. Now they go after it just to see if they can catch it.
When they have had enough, they walk right up to my hand, sniff, hiss,
and then walk away.

Try walls and ceiling. Even when mine get bored, they can't seem to stand
that.

Clifford (RB) figured it out, but liked it. He understood what made the
red dot, and was known to go over to the pointer on a table, tap it, and
suggestively mrrrrp.

Same here. It has to be hidden out of sight when it isn't playtime.
Otherwise it'd end up with the several dozen missing micey toys.

Oh - smart cats you have!
Mine never lifted the secret - but once they were one year old they stopped
playing :-(

Jessie figured out the connection - in fact she comes running when I sit
down on the couch because I keep it in a little basket on the coffee table.
When I pick it up she meows and rubs her head all over it.  But she still
chases it down until she is ready to drop.  She says it's her most funnest
toy!

Pepper figured out mighty fast that he could never kill the red dot.
However, Simba still thinks he will kill it good one of these days.  He
chases it so hard and long he starts to pant like a dog.  Its to the
point that we will wait until he baps it with a paw so we can flick the
light off at the same time.  The theory being he will think he killed
it.  Of course, he receives much praise for this.  I have also found
that if we run the red dot along the ceiling in a zig zag pattern that
imitates a bug even pepper gets involved.  Poor peppers life ambition
is to touch the ceiling.  He just knows it's better up high.

Felix just looks at the dot, then looks at my hand with a very teenage
"yeah, whatever, Mom" expression.

Another key to successful red dot play is to catch them right when they are
getting the zoomies.

Felix doesn't do zoomies. He leaves that to Ava (who's terrified of
the laser pointer).

LOL!
My cats know I'm working the laser pointer, but they still go nuts.
I've got Rhett on video jumping so high that he tries to grab the
dot at 6' off the floor!  They literally fall over each other
trying to get at it. One mistake I made was to let the dot get too
close to my feet and got toes impaled for my stupidity. LOL

Someone in one of the groups wrote years ago about how he put the
dot away, and I wish I could remember who so I could point you to
the archives. It was very clever. He'd shine the dot slowly toward
his hand, the dot would be in his palm and he'd close his hand and
dot went bye bye. :)
