cat houses

I've got way too many cats and would like to make some kind
of houses for them where they can have a little privacy or really
more security.

I thought about getting some plastic boxes with the red tops that
open and cutting an appropriate sized hole so that a cat could
get in and keep unwanted visitors out and the top would make it
easy to clean.

My wife says the houses should be off the ground which makes
the project a lot more difficult.

We have a carpeted 2x4 leading up to an inside ledge about 20'
x 4' which gives them some room. I thought they might want to
hide from us humans if they had the opportunity but they don't
seem to want to escape from us but do avoid each other.

Thanks for any ideas about how we might be able to make some
good cat houses.

I've just sent you a couple of pictures of Matilda's houses.

Best wishes,

How about getting a cheap shelf (in a second-hand shop) and filling it with
cardboard boxes?
Don't forget to put some carpet pieces in them.

That would be good but somehow there has to be a way
for the cats to access the 'houses' without getting in each
other's way, and if a cat takes the first house then he will
keep the other from getting by.

I might not be picturing what you mean though. Is there a
way that you can explain in more detail? Thanks.

Well, my idea was: get something cheap from the 2nd hand shop and some
cardboard boxes and be imaginative. If it doesn't work out you've lost
nothing.
A large cat tree is expensive of course, but cats like it. If you're lucky
you can find a nice used one.
I myself like to use what there is available in my home: one cat likes to be
on my wardrobe, so I've put a bed up there and placed the guitar box in a
way that she can use it to get up.
Cardboard boxes are always good anyway, especially if you throw in an old
towel.

Someone once posted the URL of a nice cat home here, in fact it was about a
book. I could not find it though in the net. Does anybody know what I'm
talking about? This was about how to get a home converted into a nice home
for cats and humans.

That would be great, a book like that.
How to enclose a backyard, how to
make safe spaces for more than a few
cats, best way to make a clean place
for eating and litter. Please!

I am not sure if this is the web site you are speaking of, but I will paste it here:
http://www.thecatshouse.com/

this is the main page . . . click on the text link that states "The Cats' House", and you can take a virtual tour of their house.  The site has changed since I was there some time ago, so I am going to have to go back and have a look, too :)

Bob Walker and Frances Mooney are the authors of the book of the same name - - it is a really fantastic house.  They remodelled the entire house around their cats . . . I would love to have something like that for my cats! Bob has at least two other books, with fantastic photography of the cats and super-bright colors on the facing pages.  Very eye-catching!  Their house tends to reflect  this trend.

I hope this is the site/book you are thinking of!

Yes, exactly - thanks!

I'd love to see how they build the outside enclosure, bet it will be on the
site soon too.
