Love your pic at the bottom of the page, Carola. Our cat is an indoor cat.
Does this matter? He was already checked over by the vet. If he's always
indoors, will he get fleas anyway? Thanks!

Even an indoor cat is at risk form all the nasties that are out there. All
kinds of bugs can get into your house and bite the kitty.

Thanks Mar! I think I'll get Whiskers a flea collar. :-)

I wouldn't, it can take off the fur. You can get some long lasting stuff
from the vet when it comes to it.

Flea collars are probably the worst thing you can do. Not only can they be
toxic to ats and dogs, they don't actually protect the animal against fleas.
The only area that will be protected is about a one inch area around the
collar, and even then it only lasts for a few weeks.

I didn't know that. How awful! Thanks for letting me know, Mar.

Di, indoor cats can get fleas, also; particularly if you live in a
humid warm climate. Just check them over once in a while. Look for
little black flecks in their fur, in addition to live fleas. If you
don't see anything, and the cat doesn't scratch excessively, I wouldn't
worry about using flea products. Here, the cats never get fleas until
late summer. (and they even go out occasionally)

Thanks Sherry! I'll keep an eye on Whiskers. We live in Canada so we don't
get too many hot and humid days here although the Farmers' Almanac says we
will be getting some this Summer. We'll see. :-)

I have inadvertently brought fleas home from friends homes and my own dogs
have brought in fleas. I have three indoor only cats.

The anti-parasite stuff I bought in the pet shop does not work at all.
I don't think it's harmful, but it smells strongly like lemon oil.
I wonder if that bothers the cats. I mean, they are very sensitive towards
smells, and lemon oil is not they're favourite.
The stuff from the vet is more expensive but also more effective, so
actually works out cheaper.
I've learned my lesson ...
In the pet shop they sell sprays too, but can that be good for the cats?
They would just lick it off, wouldn't they?
I use them for the beds, although they are for direct use on the animals.

If you can get them on them in the first place. My two run a mile at the
sound of any spray - it sounds like hissing to them.

Yup. I have flea sprays around for any time I need to treat an area a cat
has been sleeping it. I spray my couches - including under the seat
cushions - a couple of times a year, as those are favourite sleeping areas.

My Fleagor manages to find live ticks every month of the year - even
when there's snow on the ground and the temperature is far below
freezing. All of my cats get Frontline every month, but it seems to
work for ticks on Fleagor for a bit less than a month (he's a large,
Main Coon type, indoor/outdoor cat who hunts in all kinds of weather.
