cats and citrus

Do cats really hate citrus?  I got a citrus-based home fragrance oil that
smells very nice and fresh.  My husband and I both enjoy it, but I seem to
remember that cats don't like it.  Is this true?  I live in a small
one-bedroom apartment in NYC.  My cats haven't flipped out or anything since
I started burning the oil, but what should I look out for?   I don't want to
traumatize them.  My husband and I both like the smell, so I would like to
use the oil, but I won't if my cats don't like it -- how will I be able to
tell?

I'm not sure on this one. My cats don't like to go near when we are eating
oranges, when any other thing we are eating will make them extremely
friendly! However, I have an orange oil cleaner which I used to clean
furniture that I would rather they didn't get on, and it had no effect
whatsoever!

Citrus keeps mosquitoes away, so the smell must an influence, not too much
on a cat I would say though.
How about getting lavender or ginger or rosewood? There are so many nice
smells.

If you want to get a smell for your cat then buy *mint*!

And don't get teatree oil, they really hate it! Cat and dog took off last
night after I had rubbed a bit on my foot.

You are absolutely right about the tea tree oil Carola. I have very long
hair, (past my butt), and my female liked to play with it and to chew on
it. Now that I have started using tea tree oil shampoo, she leaves it
alone. I am glad about that fact though. Sometimes she would take a
couple of inches off of the bottom of my hair by biting it! Now I can do
whatever I want with my hair when she is around. She just has to smell
it and she scampers away from it.

LOL
one of my cats often is trying to wash my hair (by licking of course)
and purrs like mad during the process.  its when the rough tongue
starts hitting the skin that it gets uncomfortable though

I wonder when Airwick will make a tuna-fish scented air freshener!

Hi Nimu,

I've been an aromatherapist for 15 years and a cat lover and owner for 25
and I have heard that some cats dislike citrus oils. But the Oil that really
puts them off is Peppermint (Mentha piperita) - I advise gardeners who want
to keep neighbouring cats off their patch to use this oil on sticks put in
the ground upwind.

They do of course love Essential Oil of catnip - which I buy in specially
for my pusscat family. Its quite rare and pricey - but the entertainment you
get when you put a drop on the rug is well worth it!

Best wishes,
Samantha

Can you answer a question which I have had for years?
What is the difference between

mint (peppermint)
catmint and
catnip?

Thanks!   Carola

Hi Carola,

Yes I think I can. Its all a basic confusion to do with Latin (botanical)
names and "common" names.

Peppermint is Mentha piperitus, Spearmint is Mentha spicata, Catmint is also
commonly known as Catnip and Catnep, it is Nepeta cateria (really!), it is
of the same family as mints (the Labiatae family) which is why it is called
a "mint".

Hope this has finally cleared this up!

Another weird example is Tea Tree - common name of Melaleuca alternifolia,
it is not related to TEA as we know and understand it. Which is why some
aromatherapists (like me) call it Ti Tree instead. But its the same E. Oil.
And which is why aromatherapists worth their salt buy by Latin Name, not
common name. Saved confusion.

Best wishes,
Samantha

Important point re: Essential Oils and cats. While it is fine to fragrance
oils in the home as Nimue is doing, it is NOT fine to use EO's on cats.
Unlike dogs and horses - who seem to love them - a cats liver cannot process
EO's and all EOs are toxic to cats.

I only mention this because in some books they advise putting drops of
various oils on a cats neck to repel fleas etc. Dont do it!

I didn't think they did, but my kitty loves Miss Vickie's brand of chips
flavored "Lime and Black Pepper"!

She eats them up after one sniff and seems to really enjoy them.
