Cat pooing on the floor

Hello,
Recently my cat seems to have taken to pooing on the floor right next to his
litter tray. This appears to be independent of how dirty / full the litter
is, and we haven't changed his food lately.

The only correlation appears to be that he only does it when we aren't
around, e.g. when we're at work or asleep. Other times he uses the litter as
normal.

Does anyone know why he might be doing this? He hasn't been castrated yet,
but will be this week.

"Subtle signs of illness"

"Cats are notorious for their ability to appear healthy when they are
actually sick.  Be on the lookout for subtle signs of illness..."

Including...

"Cats that repeatedly defecate outside the box may be suffering from a
disease of the large intestine."

It could be his way of telling you that he doesn't like being left
alone. It could also be that the litter pan is too small for him. I know
that some cats do not like to "step in" their own used litter pans. If I
don't clean out my cats litter pans after they are finished with it,
they will poop on the floor next to it. Also, my cats use the one for
urinating, and the other for defecating. It doesn't seem to matter which
one is where, they will still use the one for one job, and the other for
the other job. Pernifity little devils. LOL

Our guy will miss the box if it hasn't been cleaned.  He hates to step on
anything that's not clean & will squat off to the side.
