I feed some strays and my problem is that during the nasty Michigan weather the worst the
weather the more the damn blackbirds eat the cat food!!! No matter what kind of dry I put
out or where I put it they find it. I put it under the porch of an abandoned house they
find it. Under a car they find it. Under a large piece of plywood leaning against a
building they find it!!! I know it is them because I see them PLUS the snow is trampled
with bird tracks !! Get the pic ??? I do not live in the area so I can not go building
things or buying feeders and stuff to leave there because the area of town it is in things
have a way of "Walking away" !! I tryed moist (Canned) food but if the blackbirds do not
find dry they go after the canned. Just when the strays need food the most they get it
the least because of the blasted blackbirds !! The sparrows and other types are find .
And yes I have even started feeding the squirrels and birds thinking that will help but
the blackbirds still eat the cat food after there wipe out the bird food !!! There can go
through (The blackbirds) a 50 bag of sunflower seeds in 2 days not to mention the regular
seed for the smaller birds or nuts and that for the squirrel . Looks like I may have to
stop feeding when the strays need it the most . I am on a fixed income and it is getting
too expensive trying to feed them when the blackbirds wipe it out in minutes ..
Was just wonder if anyone knew of some type of good dry cat food that the birds do not
like .. I know that they make a type of bird feed that squirrels do not like and thought
they might be something like that for cats that blackbirds do not like ..
Any REASONABLE suggestion appreciated that a person on a fixed income can afford.

Timing the feeding to coincide with the cats' active period and the
birds' inactive times might work - that way the cats would have a
better chance of getting to the food first. The birds are active
during the day, but the cats are often sleeping then; the cats are
most active at dusk and dawn, but the birds can't see well then and
are less active to inactive. Just before dark seems to me to be the
best time.

I agree with what you are saying but I feed them when I can get over there which is
usually during the middle of the day. As I said I do not live in the area and am getting
up there in age and do not like to drive in the bad weather or after dark. On top of that
I have been feeding them that time for a couple years now and they know the routine and
when they see my car they show up. Plus I usually set until I see most of them eat which
would not be too safe in that area in the evening.

I have the same problem. The birds this year (tons of crows and 1
seagull) wait for me. I feed the stray at work when I see him during the
day, which helps, but on the weekend I go over there once a day.
Sometimes the cat waits, sometimes the birds wait.
I was thinking of putting wet food out, don't know if the birds would
leave that alone.
