My cat is about 17 years old and has been losing weight steadily for several
months. We took him to the vet and had a complete workup done on him but
found nothing wrong. The blood panel showed his thyroid levels to be a bit
low. He is constantly hungery, he eats ravinously any time he can, and he
continues to lose weight. Has anyone else seen this problem? I understand
there is a mal-absorbtion disease(?) but can't find anything on it.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. He can't go on like
this very much longer.
Thanks.

Check for diabetes, chronic renal failure, feline leukemia, feline
immunodeficiency virus, feline infectious peritonitis, and other
systemic illnesses, as well as gastrointestinal parasites. Any of these
could be the culprit.

How long ago was the thyroid panel run? With the loss of weight, combined
w/ losing weight, it does sound like hyper(not hypo)thyroidism is a very
good possibility, which is quite common in older cats.

Duh - make that "loss of weight, combined with ravenous appetite"! Classic
symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

Sounds like hyperactive thyroid, which is common in cats. See another vet
who will treat him.

Did the blood tests suggest abnormal kidney function? Kidney disease in
older cats is pretty common and it causes weight loss. How much does your
cat drink?
