hantayo - 12 Feb 2005 19:52 GMT Hi All, I haven't been around here for quite awhile (because of trolls...). My house cat, Toma, is in poor health at the moment & I'm searching for all the information that I can get. It's very difficult for me to keep from totally losing it - I'm so worried about her. She's my whole world. She's 13.5 years young & she has never been seriously ill so this is completely new territory for us. She stopped eating after Thursday because she couldn't keep anything down. By yesterday she stopped drinking water because she couldn't keep that down either. We took her to the vet yesterday & he took blood samples & gave her a physical exam. She didn't have a fever & he said he didn't find any obviously wrong. I was worried about dehydration & the vet was too so he injected fluid under her skin (for the life of me I can't remember the term for that procedure...). The vet said that the blood workup would probably be back on Monday. So far today she hasn't eaten at all & I haven't seen her drinking anything. I was just about to call the vet & ask him if I should go ahead & give her some water by mouth (even though she doesn't seem to want any...). Going without food is one thing but, going without water is no good. :-( I believe that Toma is showing all the signs of kidney failure & I'm trying to keep hope alive but, it's getting to be very difficult to do so. If anyone has had any experience with this kind of situation I would appreciate any information you could give. Years ago my Siamese died from kidney failure but, this situation is different so far. >^.,.^< Thanks in advance... Kathy

Around here we have some that are open 24/7.
Dehydration would a real concern, one of the things that concerns me is why the vet didn't suggest taking the cat AT THAT MOMEMENT to a local animal hospital.
I would treat this as an emergency get the cat to an animal hospital stat.

If she does, is there any possibility that she could have gotten access to some antifreeze? This sounds like it could be a type of poisoning. Just a thought.

The vet called yesterday & told me it looks like kidney trouble. I'm taking her to the vet's tomorrow & talking about what I can do next. She's my whole world & I will do whatever I need to do for her. I just want her to have a good quality of life as long as she is not suffering. God - I can't believe this is happening! Kathy

I too will be praying that your little furbaby's outcome is good. I am so glad to know that she is an indoor cat, and that the possibility of antifreeze poisoning isn't the problem. Like Mary said, please keep us posted on her progress. You are among fellow cat lovers and friends here.

Right now my eyes are red & swollen from crying. This is so impossible for me to accept. Kathy

Focus on your love for kitty and envision good health coming toward her. (I know this sounds stupid, but trust me.) Above all, know that you will do the right thing by your baby and that she is lucky to have you looking after her. Give her a pet on the head for me. We'll look news from you tomorrow.

> Kathy, how is your kitty? Toma is better but, it's only a reprieve. Her kidneys are failing & there is nothing that can turn it around. When we took her to the vet's yesterday he injected 4 syringes of fluid (mixed with dextrose...) under her skin again. He also gave her an antibiotic shot, a diuretic shot & a cortisone shot. That was done around 1:30 PM yesterday & she was able to sleep the rest of the day & evening. She was still very introverted & not her animated feisty self. Around 5:30 this morning she actually was very engaging & hungry & she is drinking water. Dale usually has his 'Toma' time early in the morning - it's their special time. They both came into the bedroom & there was Toma - talking & kneading - it was such a thrill. The little things are so special. She hadn't had any food since Wed. night & she ended up throwing that up. This morning she has eaten maybe 2 tablespoons of food & she has - so far - kept it down. We have another appointment at the vet's at 3:30 PM. I think that he was planning on injecting her with fluids again. The vet called this morning (Dale talked to him...) to check on her condition & he seemed pleased to hear that she was doing so well. I really don't know if it is unfair to put her through this ordeal or not. It was so hard on her being forced into her kennel in order to go to the vets. She did not want to go through that hell again. I'm very torn on what to do next. Thanks for listening. Kathy

(And by the way, never lose him, what a jewell, that he would call to check on her this morning!) Discuss it thoroughly with him, tell him you want what is best for her. My heart goes out to you all.

I too feel for you Kathy. I know that this might sound harsh, and I am not saying it to be cruel, but, wouldn't it be better for Toma if she was put out of her suffering? I know that it is a difficult time, and the decission is a hard one to make. I appologize for offending any one. It is not my intent to do so. I know for myself, that I would probably end her suffering while she still has some good memories. That's just me. Once again, I am sorry to hear about the outcome of Toma's vet visit.

I think she will let me know when she has had enough. Today the vet gave her 2 injections of fluid-Sub-Q, a Baytril injection & Dexamethasone injection (I now have the receipt so I have better details.). He sent prednisone tablets (5 mg) home with me & he said to give her 1 a day. We also talked about when to finally let her go. I'm just going to follow her signals & respect her wishes. Toma has been so good through all of this - I'm humbled by her spirit. Letting her go is going to be unimaginably difficult...:'-( Kathy

I'm sorry you have to go through this, and that she does. There may be sadder things in life than letting go of one we love, but there are not many.
