Hi all,

Been reading for a few days now and read some interesting posts, so thought
I'd write one.

I have 3 cats, all are rescued and living comfortably with me, my partner,
dog and rabbits.
Taking in an animal from a rescue centre seemed like a good idea, so we went
to get a kitten from the Cat's Protection League.  The only kittens which
were suitable to our living condition came as a pair so we were delighted to
take both of. A week later our little babies arrived.  They loved each other
and the eldest Shelby took good care of Fluffy his half brother.
Sadly, just over a year after we had them Shelby was ran over by a car
outside our house and was unable to be saved. Fluffy never seemed to notice
this and carried on as normal.  Fluffy is a long hair and it was Shelby that
used to keep him in tip top condition. After a while he began to knotted up
around his belly but he's not one for  people grooming so he has regular
vists to the vets for grooming.
Begining of last year he was hit by a car and suffered from a broken pelvis,
he had 6days in care, 8mth in a cage at home to stop him moving round too
much and lots of care, attentions and fresh salmon. Slowly he recovered and
now just walks with a bit of a limp.
We thought maybe Fluff would like another cat to keep him company seeing as
he had always had one around so we got another cat called Leon who was also
a rescue.
Fluff wouldn't take to Leon, no matter what he wasn't having anything to do
with him. So things carried on as normal with these two cats glaring at each
other while eating and then racing to the warmest comfiest place to sleep it
off.
Leon is so much like Shelby it's spooky! They have very simular marking and
attitudes.  Shelby was never too keen on me, more my partners pet.  He would
attack me for no reason and I think he would rather of eaten his tail than
take anything from me.  He'd never sit with me and if i called him he'd
never even bother to put his ears up! Leon is the same, everything Shelby
was like Leon is exactly the same! Don't see why Fluff wouldn't take to him.
Then we had another accident.  Fluff gets mad at Leon sometimes for no
reason and swipes at him the jumps on the window sill.  I don't know if any
of your cats do it but when Fluffy jumps on the window sill he does it
sideways and actually jumps against the window.  This day in particular
Fluffy got mad a t Leon again upatiars in our bedroom and i heard scatting
around but thought nothing of it. Next thing i knew i saw something black
fall past the front room window!  He had jumped on the window but it had
been raining and i had left the window open and he must of slipped on the
wet sill.  Fortunately, a quick trip to the vets showed he was fine with
absolutely no damage to himself, except another small facture to his hip
with caused him no trouble.  If we hadn't of not bothered to get round to
laying the patio it could of been much worse but thankfully we're lazy.
We thought maybe Leon was lonely with Fluffy not being interested in him so
we got yet another rescue kitten.  Tabby and Leon are the best of friends
and do and go everywhere together.  Fluffy keeps them in line because the
pair of them are very naughty, empting the kitchen bin on the floor and
stuff but Fluff soon tells them when he thinks enough is enough.

So that is the story with my cats, maybe it wasn't quite so lucky for Shelby
and Fluff so be rescued by us but hopefully Shelby enjoyed his short
life.Hope i haven't bored you too much and if any of you read it all then
thanks.

My question to you is, after the first cat got hit by a car, why the HELL
did you continue to let your cats freely roam, only to have another hit by a
car. All this story tells me, is that you are not a responsible pet owner.
I could not read through the whole story, because I was appalled at your
irresponsibility.

I am far from a responsible owner. I have 8 pets and all of them are
healthly, happy and well looked after.
I live on the edge of a small village, which has hardly any traffic through
it.  We thought of keeping the cats indoors but then what is the point of
having a cat that has to live inside the house and not experience climbing
trees, catching birds and mice and bathing in the sun?
There is a small amount of traffic which goes past my house and
unfortunately the younger people drive over the speed limit of 30mph.  So
far since in the 3 years I have lived here there has been 5 cats, (not
including my 2), 2 dogs and a 12years old child all hit by cars on my road.
It's not me who is unresponsible it is car drivers who don't respect the
speed limit!  I love my animals dearly and would do anything to prevent them
being harmed but I refuse to make my cats unhappy by taking away their right
to go outside.

"So far since in the 3 years I have lived here there has been 5 cats, (not

What a total contradiction. You say that you love your animals dearly, but
you continue to let them "experience climbing
trees, catching birds and mice and........" becoming ROADKILL.  I think that
the first line of your reply, says it ALL.

I would point out not everyone is in a location that is ideal.  I have
a niece who lives in a rural section of West Virginia, they live on
a tiny two lane road where it is next to impossible for an animal to
not become road kill.  Of course that doesn't stop people from
depositing unwanted animals in the area.

It should be pointed out there are many small two lane roads in
West Virginia where the speed limit is 55mph.

Also do a google search on this newsgroup.....see all the posts
from those who claim you are abusing your cat if you keep them
indoors.

You know, I always thought that cat owners were the nicest of people, kind
and affectionate like the little critters themselves but I was clearly
mistaken...

I thank you for calling me irresponsible and making aware that it is my
fault my cats were ran over, how stupid of me to not realise that I'm the
one to blame, I mean why not just say that I murdered them.

My cats tend to stay on the rear of my property which backs onto woodland
which is why i feel confident to let them out.  My youngest 2 have never
been on the front without me or my partner being there doing the garden.

My son was hit by a car and killed when he was 18 but I suppose that was my
fault too and that I shouldn't of let him out either!

Do you not consider peoples feelings?
