I've been feeding a stray cat for over a year. This past summer he
developed some sores on his body that led to fur loss. Two days ago he
had some blood on his side, a crusty sore, and missing fur. Is he
getting into cat fights or does he have some type of skin infection?
Thanks for any help.

Sounds like he has got some infected abscesses from fighting. About half the
time these heal by themselves (if they have already burst) but you might
want to keep an eye on it & if it fills up with pus or gets very hot he will
really need to get to a vets to have it properly cleaned out.

Unlike I.P.Freely I would have opted for a skin infection: fungus, eczema or
ringworm.
But whatever it is: Is there any way you can trap him and to bring him to a
vet?
You could ask your local pet rescue for help too.
Poor thing!

It could be just about anything. Like Carola said, could be a skin condition
like ringworm or even mange. But since there's blood, it could also be that the
cat is fighting, and has suffered bites that have turned to abscess. Sometimes
a bacterial infection will set in a wound like that and cause a large patch of
hair to fall out.
Is there any way you could get him to a vet? Antibiotics can really help
abscessed wounds to heal, if that's what it is.
