Every now and then, one hears a story of how a dog saved
someone's life.  Has anyone ever heard a story of a cat saving a human
life, or any life but its own?

Several, nearly all on one or other of these cat NGs, but I cannot
remember details.  There was one where there was a fire and the cat woke
his human - that's all I can remember.

hahahahahaha - you must be joking!

Okay, well there was one case where a cat dragged a baby out of a
burning building (yeah, right).

Actually yeah. Cat babies. One of the most famous cats in the world is
Scarlett who saved her kittens from the burning building, despite getting a
number of 3rd degree burns herself. Fire-fighters noticed a sweet cat going
back and forth into the burning building and finally helped her and the
kittens she already pulled out to safety.

There are books written about her as well:

And that is just one of many amazing cats :)

I was simply wondering whether all the kittens were saved.

So do most people.

As for Scarlett she didnt think only of herself, she has burned herself
badly trying to safe her kittines. And she did.

I disagree cats do not only think of themselves. Cats think of people to,
they may not have the ability to drag your out of a burning building or out
of a lake but the have the sence that they know when things are not right.
When you are upset, your cat can since that and usually attempts to comfort
you.
I have been really sick with cancer for a while and if it had not been for
my dear Pheniox I would have given up along time ago. SO she is my hero, I
don't know if she knows that but she is. Her pure determination gave me the
will to fight to.
If I have a bad day or doctors appointment I take great comfort in knowing
that she will great me at the door and cuddle with me untill the tears stop.

i am told
when i was a baby
the cat would always run to the crib and sleep with me
and when i would cry the cat would always be there before mom.

A year or two ago here in the UK a cat was given an animal bravery award;
someone had broken into it's elderly owner's home, but on turning to head
upstairs burglar met cat, which launched itself at his face and remained
attached there clawing and biting as the bloke stumbled back out of the
house and ran for his life. He was eventually forced to confess when he had
to go to hospital because his wounds were so severe.

I've heard lots of stories of cats giving essential advance warning of
bombing raids during the Blitz in World War 2. There is a recently published
book about hero animals including several cats written by Jilly Cooper,
haven't read it but apparently fascinating.
