Depressed appetite with illness

Hello,

I have a cat with a serious illness (pneumonia and a yeast infection of the
lungs complicated by feline asthma) who is on medication to treat the
pneumonia (antibiotics) and yeast infection (itraconozol) and asthma
(albuterol and flovent).  Not surprisingly, all these meds are souring his
stomach and although he shows interest in food, he won't eat much.  This
isn't helping him, as he's loosing weight and needs to eat.  He'll be on the
meds for at least another month or two.  We're looking for ideas on how to
stimulate his appetite.  We've tried Science Diet A/D and many brands of
store bought cat food (and also tuna) looking for something he finds
palatable.  Are there any ideas out there?  We would like to nurse him back
to health!  If he can get past the pneumonia and yeast infection, the asthma
is managable.

Thanks in advance,

The stinkier the better, and for this purpose, Fancy Feast is great
stuff. It is not quality cat food but has flavor enhancers that many
cats like. "Chopped Grill" is a particularly stinky flavor.

Others try baby food when cats are weak or ill--just be sure
there are no onions in it as they are bad for cats. If you need to
you can put it in a turkey baster and feed him a bit at a time in your
arms.

So sorry to hear that your kitty is ill. I agree that Fancy Feast is a
possibility. Cats really love the flavor. I'lldo some digging around and
try to find some suggestions. Best of luck to you.

If your cat is nauseous he won't want to eat regardless of what you try
to tempt him with. Zantac is an appoptiate medication for cats
experiencing nausea and has less drug interactions than Pepcid does.
Since you're using an anti-fungal medication you'll need to give that 2
hours apart from the Zantac. The dose for Zantac is 2 mg per pound. When
I've purchased Zantac I buy the generic version from Target as it is
round (and easier to split) and not a weird shape like the name brand
version.
