Cat Screaming Every Night...

So, I have this grey tabby, he is cool, I like him.

Problem is that every night, between 11pm and 4am, he goes nuts... At random
intervals he just starts howling at the walls. It does not take place at any
particular spot, nor does it happen at the same time each night.

He usually yowls about four to five times and then stops.... There is no
readily obvious pattern to it.

He is very loud and has woken us up numerous times (he usually times it so
that it happens just as your about to fall asleep).

He is 9 years old, and neutered, and he started doing this about 8 months
ago.

What are my options to make him stop?

Take him to the vet and have him tested for thyroid issues. Also have
his blood pressure checked. Unexplained howling is a common symptom of
hyperthyroid and high blood pressure. Any time a cat exhibits an odd or
sudden change in behavior it is prudent to investigate to see if there's
a medical cause (which is the case the majority of the time.)

Well, you could get up and play with him. But hey! that's not realistic. He
might be lonely, could get another cat. How about a 6 year old female ? ;-)
How long have you had him? My 3? year old did this when I first got her, I
finally just got up and grabbed her and put her on the bed and went back to
sleep and that worked. I think whoever had her before did not allow her in
the bedroom. A trip to the vet for a checkup might be a good idea also.

I have two other cats... (two other cats I wish would attack him when he
starts screaming...)

I have had him since he was teeny...

I have grabbed him, stuffed him under the blankets with me and pinned him
down...

Well, it is vet time for all of them...

Having gone through something similar with my now previous cat, I can only
suggest that you take him to the vet for a full work up and diagnosis. What
you describe could be a thyroid problem and this, left untreated will
definitely cause a lot of grief.

An excellent suggestion. It is always best to rule out illness or
discomfort.

Check him to see if he is going deaf.  My siamese male started
yowling and screaming at odd times a few years ago.  Slowly
we realized he's deaf.  So the screaming may be because he
can't hear himself.

He can definitely hear... I rattle the Pounce can and he bolts over...

I just learned that male cats will call to female cats nearby if they are
in heat.  My tomcat will make these deep crying/groaning noises when the
female cats in the neighborhood are in heat.  He is also very persistant
when wanting to go outside and stays gone for longer periods of time.

The problem with this theory (with respect to my gray tabby), is that his
balls were cut off 8 years ago.

He may be letting out a "mating call" if there are female cats near.
