After brushing my longhair, for the first time in a while, I noticed
what appear to be dry skin flakes in the fur some hours later.  I can
only assume its dandruff.

Parting the hair in several places along the back, and looking at the
skin, it looks quite normal and healthy to me, and the cat isnt
irritated by it

Any idea what is the cause and treatment for this or if it's a serious
problem ?  I wasn't really sure that cats could get it.  It does seem
to be clearing up over the last couple of days since I noticed it

Try brushing your cat more often (daily for a longhair).  What you see is
cat dander, flakes of dry skin exacerbated by the dry weather.  You might
think brushing will make it worse, but you'll bring it under control.

Also, does your cat eat wet food?  Up his/her wet food intake.  You can buy
stuff to treat your kitty's coat, too.

They eat both usually.  I put the canned food out 1-2 times a day and
leave them a constant supply of the dry food (IGA Degree, the only dry
one they will eat)

Also gave him a thorough wash with a cat shampoo I got from the vet,
worked it thoroughly in with my fingertips and massaged the skin as
best I could all over his back for about 10 minutes before rinsing and
repeating.  I feel that this has loosened most of it - and anything
else there that might be annoying him.

The brushing i have been doing 1-2 times daily since , and the
dandruff/dander seems to be lessening, and now is only at the lower
back area (above tail)

Many thanks for the advice
