Every once in a while my male orange tabby jumps on top of my bookcase.  He
doesn't harm anything; he just seems to like doing it.  Is there a reason
why he does this?  I was told that he likes to do it is because he, like
many cats, likes high places.

Any information is appreciated; thanks in advance.

Whoever told you that cats like high places is correct.

Oh I have always been told and read that cats like to be high up. Mine do it I just assumed it was normal, sorry for my lack of knowing.
How are the kittys Jackieo?

My two cats are doing just fine thank you. When I decide which pictures
of them to post, I will do so, and then you can see for yourself.
I hope that Pheonix is feeling better these days.
By the way, don't let Mary's comments bother you, just consider who they
are coming from, and then sigh, and shake your head in embarassment for
her. That's what I do. Either that, or I keep doing the things that seem
to piss her off. Believe me, it doesn't take much. LOL

Yes. It's important to a cat's happiness and security to be able to perch
somewhere high.

May the forces of evil become confused
on the way to your house.

Mine does this as the kitchen cabinets are the highest place in the house.
She gets upset however when I just reach up and pat her on top of her head.
Perhaps it blows her ego all to hell.

It's scary when you start making the same noises as your coffeemaker.

ROTFL!

I've known a cat get on top of the highest place, then walk around in
Halloween Cat pose. :)

Thanks for all the information; I appreciate it very much.  However what I
find strange is that of our 3 cats, this cat's the only one who goes on top
of the bookcase; our other 2 cats don't bother with getting up high.

Every cat is different.  We can tell you about tendencies we've observed,
but what each individual cat will do is completely up to them.  And they
change over time.  They will keep you guessing and surprise you as often
as possible.  Just watch and enjoy.
