This past tuesday, our Miss Kittles gave birth to four little ones.  (My
sister told me that they should be called "kittlens" instead of kittens
because momma's name is Miss Kittles....heh...)  I came home from my college
classes and my fiancee said, "She had one already!!"  Over the next 3 hours,
she had 3 more.

Neither one of us had ever seen a litter of kitties born, and didn't know
what to expect.  She had them in our bedroom behind the entertainment center
(which doesn't have a tv on it....it just holds the stereo, and some
knick-knacks...and is angled against the corner of the wall so that there is
space behind it).  She spent the first two days back there with them, then
she started coming out to eat and use her litter box.

The strangest thing was the color of the kittlens....  Miss Kittles is a
black and white "bowtie" or "tuxedo" cat.  The male cat was solid jet-black.
One of the little ones is jet-black, one is a very dark grey-black (looks
like black and white fur mixed together all over its body), one is black
with white feet and legs, and the last one is solid white!!  We were NOT
expecting a white one in the brood!

They're adorable....they don't even have their eyes open yet, so they all
look like little furry Yodas.  I'm trying to soak up their cuteness since
this will be the first and LAST litter that Miss Kittles has.  We didn't
have the money to get her spayed before this happened, but as soon as those
kittlens are able to eat catfood, she's gonna have an appointment with the
vet.  :)

Julia, it is quite common for cats and dogs to carry the genes of their
grandparents. Were either of them an all white cat, or mostly white? If
not, it could be that that the white colour gene was more prominant in
the little sweetie. I hope that you are able to share some photos with
us all. Have you been looking into finding homes for the little kittlins
yet? It is a good idea to have your little girl fixed as soon as you are
able. I know where I am, there is a spay/neuter clinic that is run by
our local Humane Society, and it is a lot cheaper to go there for the
proceedure, rather than going to the vet. You guys might have something
similar where you are. It doesn't hurt to find out. I know that my vet
wants 400.00 Canadian (before taxes), (add another 15% to the initial
cost), to spay my female, and the clinic wants 107.00 with taxes, to do
the same proceedure.
I too would be enjoying the kittens as much as I could. I know that a
kitten that is lavished with love when it is young, usually make good
companions when they are older.

I have no idea about that.

As soon as they start coming out from behind the entertainment center, I'll
take some pictures.  And yes, we started looking for homes as soon as we
knew she was pregnant.  I mean, as much as we'd *love* to keep all of them,
having five cats run around a two-bedroom apartment is not a good idea.  ;)

As soon as she stops nursing them, we're going to take her to this place
that someone told me about last week.  The only thing this place does is
spay and neuter cats and dogs.  I don't think it's run by the Humane
Society, but the person who told me about it said that she got her two cats
spayed for $30 each, and her dog for $40.  The reason it was so cheap was
because a licensed vet does not do the procedure.  The people who do it are
still in school, and they are basically doing their hands-on training.  They
work with a vet standing over them, but the students do the procedures.  I
suppose it's kind of like a hospital where med students run some procedures
with a doctor guiding them.

Cats are like dogs in that there can be more than one dad of a litter, so
the gene pool isn't limited to mom and one dad. We're always amazed when
litters come in with a wide range of colors. A coworker fostered a shepherd
mix who had seven male pups. Four of them looked like black lab mixes, two
of them like yellow labs, and the last one looked like a friggin' Great
Pyrenees.
