I think my previous post under 'Odd Places' got lost, but I'm
interested in opinions, so am reposting.
My Rexie likes to lay under the puter table next to the (I can't
member the exact name of this thing - it's a power supply/battery
thing that you have plugged in all the time, so if your power goes
off, this thing keeps the puter going for 15-20 min so you can shut if
off properly and not screw stuff up!) (How's that for a description!?)
Anyhow, obviously he does it cause it's warm. My concern is that it's
electric. I don't know if it's safe for him - due to the emissions? We
had a Siamese years ago who loved to perch on the tv cable box (also
warm and electric). She ended up dying from cancer after five
operations, and I think we've blamed ourelves ever since.
Am I being silly about this? Has anyone heard of this (being near
electric stuff) being dangerous?
I've wedged a small box near it so he can't lay by it,
but . . . .
Comments, pls.

My big guy likes to sleep on top of the computer itself. You're right,
it's warm there, and he knows that when "mom" and "dad" are on their
respective computers, we can be there for a while. This is his way of
spending time with us, and he gets a warm place to sleep in the process.
Our other cat usually sleeps on top of my desk with her paws always
close to the mouse or keyboard. After all, a cats work is never done. LOL

It's a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) :o)

Dunno. UPSes are basically big rechargable batteries, they should not give
off too much radiation as there are no emiitors in them.

It's a bad idea to let the cat sleep there, but it's a worse idea to
put the box there ... not out of concern for the cat - the UPS is
probably harmless (TV's are mostly harmless), but they need
unobstructed air flow all around them.

UPS, uninteruptable power supply.

I would doubt it is dangerous.

There have been some concerns voiced over the possible dangers posed by
electromagnetic fields, but they have yet to be confirmed by any serious
studies. Epidemiological studies of people living near high-tension power
lines have failed to turn up any problems, and people whose work exposes
them to strong EM fields don't seem to be at risk either. Since a cat's
nerves and muscles (just like ours) operate by electricity, it's not like it
is being bombarded by something alien to its metabolism. And the EM field
coming from a computer power supply is tiny.

Thx everyone for comments. It's funny that someone mentioned high
power lines. For 20 years, nearly, we lived on a corner lot and the
Valley high power lines ran right down the valley next door to us.
Instead of worrying so much about Prissy sleeping on that cable box,
perhaps I should worry about the effect the high power lines had on us
hoomins also!!

I think that you should make sure the ups And anything else has enough room
to breathe. this info is normally included with the instructions that also

Isn't it common sense that any piece of equipment which has vents needs
enough room to "breathe"?

I can't guarantee you that there is no risk of danger from living near
those power lines, but I can say with a certain degree of certainty that
worrying about it is probably more harmful.

both my cats like to lay near my feet , on my lap or on my bed, where
ever I am, so they do end up under the computer desk along with my feet
where there are 'boocoo' wires that i worry about the little cat
chewing. So I placed one of those stackable plastic boxes like milk
crates in front of the wires in a manner that will keep the cats at a
little distance but not effect the air flow seriously.
