My old cat, neutered male, no teeth, seems to not care much whether he
eats or not. One of my neighbors reported that he liked whole milk, so
I started feeding it to him in a bowl alongside his FancyFeast.
Whenever he deigns to eat at all. He goes routinely on 2 or 3 day
hunger strikes. Though skinny, he looks fairly happy and healthy. He's
on a thyroid pill, which I'm having second thoughts about too.
Does anyone know any negatives about feeding cats milk? At this point
I'll feed him about anything if I can just get him to eat.

Doesn't milk give cats the sh.ts?

Only those that are lactose intolerant. They're like us - some can take it,
some can't. But the safe thing is to feed them pet milk, which has the
lactose removed and beneficial things like taurine added. My two get a small
carton a week - lasts about 3 or 4 feeds - and they lap it up.

Ah, My Maine Coon must be lactose intolerant then - I gave him milk when he
was younger.... never again! lol

Milk is not good for male cats.
That is not good that the cat goes 2-3 days without eating. I would
have a vet look the cat over, 2-3 days without eating is not normal.
My inclination is three is a problem related to the nose. (Maybe the
cat can't smell the food so the cat doesn't eat the food?)
BTW, what food are you feeding the cat? When I get IAMS none of my
cats will eat the Lamb & Rice flavor, as best I can figure is the
smell isn't strong enough to get their attention.
(Could the Thyroid pill need adjustment of the dosage?)

I wouldn't let the cat go more than 2 days with out eating. it could cause
more problems. you could try feeding KMR which is a milk supplement. but
consult your vet

Milk generally causes bowel disturbances (they can't digest it) in
adult cats, if fed in any quantity. However, half and half
(milk/cream) seems to be better tolerated, as well as having a much
higher calorie count. Most of my cats seem to think it's the best
thing since mice.
You might also consider various meat broths, but watch out for excess
salt. Most cats would kill for the broth tuna in water is packed in,
but there are hazards associated with too much tuna.

My cats like milk but not a lot of it. I give them each about 4 Tbl spoons
twice a week, that's about all they care for. I can't find any cat treats
that they will eat. They just want take anything that I've purchased.
However, they love it when I make a sandwhich, Yum!

Thanks for the input guys. He normally only uses litter box to go
number 1 so I don't see his droppings. But on a recent bad winter day
to obliged my observations with an explosive diarrhea. That's what
made me start to suspect the milk.
To reply to some of your questions:

I suspect the same relationship re his smeller and his appetite. If
true I doubt that there's a fix though.
>(Could the Thyroid pill need adjustment of the dosage?
Blood tests are $80 per. I didn't feel I could afford more than one so
we agreed to try to dose him by observing behavior. Her prescription
was for 2.5 mg methimazole/day. She says hyper-thyroid cats are
usually ravenous and have much too high a pulse rate. This cat
generally isn't ravenous, but when he does have an 'eating' day he
does go to town. I suspect feeding him rich human food when he's on
one of these binges may precipitate his fasts sometimes. When he won't
eat he doesn't get his crushed-up pill anyway. I cut him down to 1.25
mg/day after he started getting too logy. When he's off the stuff he
acts more like my normal lovable old cat.

Cheap tuna is in my tempt-the-cat' arsenal. On his off days he'll
refuse this too. Cheap fried hamburg turned him on for awhile, but
now he's jaded with it.
I guess the old guy is on his last legs, but I'm trying to squeeze out
the max amount of time he can enjoy life. Hate to put him down.
