I'm so glad to have found this newsgroup! I'm the one that had all the sick
kittens & 2 adults. They are all much better and finally acting like kittens
should, bundles of energy! But the mom cat the last two day has been
growling & hissing at the kittens when they come near (esp. the 2 girls).
Mom is spayed, but the kittens haven't yet. They are 5 months. The are
weaned, so it not them trying to nurse. That's been for a few days, but then
she'll play w/them later.

Just now she spit & growled when I touched her lightly which I could have
startled her when she was staring a one of the kittens. But then I sat 3
feet away just calling her softly & patting the floor, and she sat there
growling at me & when some kittens came in she ran behind the table hissing.
What do you think?

Has the mother been checked by the vet to see if she is in any pain ,and
if that is the reason why she is so edgy.  Is she getting enough
attention, or is she playing second fiddle to the kittens?  Our cat
stinky will show her displeasure by giving us her back , or swating us.

I agree, it could be all of the above reasons. In addition, she could be
simply overwhelmed by kittens energy and perhaps a ruff play when she is
still recovering from her mother duties. Maybe she just want to rest
more, and being around kittens make her feel she can;t forget her motherly
duties for a second.Being snappy might mean she is trying to tell them to
move on with their life,as some  animals would do in the wild.

I noticed my Tiara is much more scared since Lil one moved in.He is so full
of energy and is constantly bugging her, while she is a very placid catand
doesn;t like playfights. Just likely you I notice if I touch her when she
doesn't see me, she jumps. Then relaxes when she sees its me and not the Lil
One. can;t do much apart from giving her more attention and spraying Lil one
with water when he bugs her, until he learns he shouldn;t be doing that. But
yes, she gets much more of my attention now :)

I agree. When I got my two cats from the Humane Society shelter, Emily had
nursed her kittens and those of three others as well, the other cat,
Gretchen had nursed two litters. The workers at the shelter laughed when I
asked if they wanted me to adopt them and leave them until they finish
nursing, they had so many kittens, it was sad. They assured me that all the
kittens were weaned and E and G needed a well deserved rest and rescue. In
fact, I only went in to adopt Emily, but as I was holding her, Gretchen had
her hind legs on my foot and front legs wrapped around my leg looking up at
me as if to say "take me, take me." A tactic that obviously worked.

You should get the kittens neutered pretty soon.

Yes, they had all been sick with upper respiratory so I had to cancel
neutering twice. But the 2 boys are set for next week & then the 2 girls
will be in two weeks after I get paid again.  I sure don't want 3 or 4 more,
yikes! ( I have 7 altogether, luckily one male stays away from everyone &
everything, so he didn't get the infections either).

I'd take her to the vet for a checkup. You didn't say how long since the
surgery, but it might not be healing properly. Anyway, what she's doing
seems excessive, like something is hurting her or she is not feeling well.
