Holly - 11 Jan 2005 20:53 GMT My father says that my husband and I have gone off the very very deep end. We both refer to ourselves as mommy and daddy to our cats. I will tell Pheniox or Sasha go tell daddy and its like they know who he is or he will tell them go tell mommy and its the same reaction. When we cuddle them its oh mommy or daddy loves you. or did you miss mommy or daddy today? The way they run the house though maybe myself or my husband should call them Mommy. This may be ranting but I really do enjoy this website, and want to apploizie to anyone who I may have offended. Thanks Holly

But I think they are actually responding to the fact that I moved their toys and scratch pad out of the back room. I tell them this and move their things about an hour before he arrives and they run back and forth to all windows till he gets here. They love my brother Don because he gives them quite a work out and will even take them rabbit hunting with him out back in the forest plus he's always got some mighty fine eats.

I can say to her "Go and look for your bone" and things the like. But talking to cats? My cats know their names, that's about it. But they watch me carefully and know when I do this or that what may be coming after. And I always thought that my last cat, Minka, could read my thoughts. Sometimes I discussed things with her and she was very willing to listen :-)

The bigger of mine, Elijah, knows his name, the word for "chicken", "whiskers", "cat", "bed", and "lap". He appears rapidly for the first three, and jumps on to the latter two if he feels like it.
The smaller, Yossie, is far too thick even to know his own name!

:) Aah,welcome to the cat world :) Yes, we all refer to ourselvesas mummy and daddy to our kitties, even tho, ou are perfectly right, they are the ones in charge :) Its a natural feeling to mother anything that is small, sweet and needs our help :) We watch our kitties grow, eat, play,we make sure they are healthy,we watch themplay, and make sure they are safe, and talk to them in baby voice. So just the way we do it with our human babies :) So nothing to be concerned about, you are not abnormal, its a natural instinct, and its perfectly normal.
> This may be ranting but I really do enjoy this website, and want to apploizie to anyone who I may have offended. You havent offended anyone.Dont worry.
Just enjoy your kitties and get prepared to become a grandma :) And yes becuase of her blindness perhaps you should limit her to one room while she is with a tiny kitten for her safety and easier way of dealing with the situation.

Holly - 12 Jan 2005 15:00 GMT Yes Gee the time is drawing near, Pheniox is scheduled for a c section of February 7th unless things try to happen before then. The doctors want to do it this was because of the bad breaks she had in her pelvis when we got her. Vet says it will reduce her strain and stress. I am alittle concerned though about leaving her alone, I worry that since she can't see them if she will know when they need caring for or if she will hear them she has no hearing in her right ear and about 40% in her left. I know I am probley worring about nothing (at least the vet says I am) Has anyone here had this experience? Oh I forgot to tell everyone, Pheniox went to vet last friday and we had another ultrasound done(vet thought she may be a little big for just 3 kittens) turns out he was right a fourth was hiding last time. Other than that everything looks good.

Cats primarily use the sense of smell, then hearing second, sight third, the way we humans use the sense of seeing primarily, then hearing, then maybe smelling. So I think she should be OK, the poor darling, although I do suggest you limit her to one room, and give her and kitties a nice corner with some carpet underneath or old rag or something and also get a bit cardboard box, tip it over and make a cat "door". It is going to be her lil house and she will feel more protected there with kittens, but be able to go out as she pleases. Put litter in the room, but on opposite side. Feed mum kitten food.
I watched my Tiara'sbirth. Her mum belonged to ex-flatmates who didn't neuter her on time. Anyway, I made her a box and put it on my double bed, and I slept sideways :) Very uncomfortable but Iwasnt about to miss the most amazing experience of my life for nothing! So mum had the 6(1 died) and I watched their every step,as much as mum would allow since she kept kittens in the box, and people say you shouldn;t touch them much til mum gets used to them, cos smell can turn her off kittens!
So then when they are 3 weeks old, fun begins as they start exploring outdoors! (Outdoors meaning outside the box :) ) Once the first one of them decided to fall off the bed, I think around 4 weeks old, I made them a lil enclosure with "walls", old rug, mum's box, baby litter box, and food area. It was like a playground and they loved it.
Beware that mum WILL move the kittens sooner or later, especially if she gets disturbed for some (to us) odd reason. It could be even the wind is too strong or something. She may move them to under the stairs, to in the cupboard, but if its not safe, best take them back.Tho she may not agree, so as amazing as these moments are, reduce visitation rights to only really ones who moan the most about it ! :)
Wow 4 kittens! its gonna be a party! :) if she givesbirth by herself, let her eat the placenta,as its very nutritious :) Dunno how much experience or knowledge you have about animal births?
I cant wait for your daily updates! Gee
Holly - 13 Jan 2005 18:04 GMT Hi Gee, I was raised on a farm, So i have seen all types of animals born, and have help deliver a few, I delivered my neighbors son 4 years ago (while waiting for the ambulance) but I have never seen kittens born. We are really, really hoping that she does not try and deliver on her own, The vet does not think she can handle it. Pheniox has sence set up shop in MY CLOSET of all places. It quite, dark and for some reason my other kitten is afraid to go in there. I really appreciate all of the advise. THANKS and I will keep you updated.

What is your secret?
Every cat i've ever had was magnetically attracted to closets. Every single one of them.
Holly - 17 Jan 2005 15:28 GMT She was getting in my closet at first but wanted to pull the strings out of my sweaters so one day I hid in the closet and gave her a good scare, that stopped that and I did not have to keep replacing sweaters.

When my husband and I got married last spring, I already had two of my kids. My husband calls them his step-cats. We've been adopted by Oreo since then, and she is definately a daddy's girl, even though it's Momma that brought her home and got all the fleas off her. :)
They are part of the family, sometimes closer than family. My eldest cat, April, has been through a high school sweetheart, two divorces, and three weddings. My second husband thought we should have her put down because she was having problems with a sensitive stomach and getting sick often. I told him that I'd had her long before he came along. He's gone, she's still with me.
Grins,
Lori

Nope, you sound like a normal cat slave to me. My parents finally get it, though, so hang in there. lol My mom even gave my cats Christmas presents this year. ;) Plus, she buys me a Boyd's Bears stuffed cat every year, and now I have quite a collection of them. Here's a pic of one of my new kittens trying to meet some new friends.

They are our babies, and yes, we are mommy and daddy to them. Cheryl, your cats are adorable. You have quite a brood there. The kittens look like they are doing much better now that they have a good home.

I think that's normal.
>Thanks >Holly RJ - 29 Mar 2005 17:07 GMT Yeah, me and my husband do the same thing. I also tell them (I have 3 cats) each in secret that they are my favorite.

I could not even entice her with treats. His cat is 11 mine is 8 and they have now been sisters for about 2 1/2 years. But they each are partial to their original parent.

LOL I even *pet* my husband and say something to Whiskers about Daddy so that he'll feel more comfortable when Daddy comes home from work. We've only had Whiskers for a little over 2 weeks and he has to reacquaint himself with my husband every time he comes home. I thought we were the only ones that do this. LOL

I will tell [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > > Thanks > > Holly em - 29 Mar 2005 23:37 GMT Holly: you are not ranting, and I doubt you have offended anyone! The topic of the newsgroup is "cats" and that is just what you are discussing *grin*
Ha, ha, and here I am (I am single) calling myself "mom" to the cats.............even my sister calls me mom when she talks to my cats. I think maybe your dad is the one off the deep end because he doesn't know what he is missing *grin* Hey, they are all our children, just like adopted human babies, just different species. God created them all, I'm sure he doesn't care if we think we are surrogate parents! :)
When I talk about my parents to my cats I call them grandma and grandpa :) I am sure my parents are not wild about that but I figure too darn bad, these are the only grandchildren I am going to produce.
I worked with a lady who had a photo of her 'grandpuppies' on her desk......I thought that was so sweet!
We love them, we are their guardians, so technically, what are we? Mom/mommy, dad/daddy. I figure anyone that has never had that bond, that ability to be able to feel what we feel, is missing out on a very valuable piece of life.
So, if this is ranting, rant away, and as for offended, by the comments, and for myself, no offense! I think it is really great to be able to compare notes with all these other "kitty parents"!

Now that I have moved out of home every time my mum comes over she always says 'how is my grandson' referring to smudge and I tell smudge 'look smudge nanna is here'. I don't know why we do it but it just natural I guess and never thought much of it until now. Kerry

I wonder how people can have phobias around them, but I do take them serious, especially when walking with the dog, although it's only a small harmless terrier. I just love holding warm fur (with a pet inside) and am in heaven when the cat starts purring. At the moment there's fur everywhere though (shedding) ...
