Hi I have 3 cats of my own,and over the last week this young kitten has been
coming into my house, well into the kitchen,I am sure it is a stray as it is
here all day and night, looks as if it is trying to get out of the rain and
freezing cold,I have been feeding it as I hate to see a young thing
suffering, would like to know how to gain it's trust as it just dives
straight out of the flap if we go into the kitchen, but sticks its wee head
in as soon as it goes out.
Two of my cats just run off when it is in but my youngest cat just sits and
lets the wee thing rub up against it.
Any help appreciated

The process will be slow, as the kitten simply doens;t know if you will be
nice to it, or horrible to it. Perhaps some people were not so pleased with
it, and it has to be extra careful.

My Charlie was a stray. He first kept coming up and just watching my 3 at
the top of the garden. Then he kept coming closer and closer and mingling
with them. I started bringing the food out for him, just put it down then
leave. He'd wait for me to go then come munch. After about a month or two he
started coming into the kitchen through the window. At first if I walked in
he dashed outside. But since I wasn;t yelling, or chasing him away, he
slowly started daring more and more. I kept leaving the kitchen door open so
I can see him come in. He was very cautious. Then once he realised I am no
threat, as I wouldn;t even move, I would just watch him and talk gently with
him, he started coming inside and exploring more and more. I gently
encouraged him, but never tried picking him up or coming closer. One day he
fell asleep indoors. Then started spraying. I realised then, we were
officially adopted :) It still took me a few months for him to let me
scratch him and him to feel comfy with it. Two years on, he is sleeping with
me on the bed, and is happy to get a scratch.

So slow is the key, do not force the contact, encourage with words, bribe
with food, and just stand and watch, trying to make yourself as small
physically as poss. It may take a few weeks or even months, but it is so
worth it once they you gain their trust. You could also try rubbing the cat
food with your hands. Dirty job, but the food will smell on you, and cat
will get used to you quicker. Again DO NOT force the contact. On the
contrary.

Finally let your cats decided on the cat hierarchy on their own. One is
already happy with the kitten the other two will get used to it with time.
