I have a kitten who is going to be spayed in a few weeks and the clinic
offers microchipping ID.

She is a completely indoor cat (as are my other two) so not sure if its
worth it. But I know that there is always a possibility of her sneaking
out...

My other two cats where collars that have ID capsules on them

Anyone here ever have this done??

I'm thinking of having that done. I think it's a good idea, Purz and Little
One are indoor cats just like yours, but there is always a chance of them
escaping.

I remember on one list (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/petvetcafe/) someone
once  posted about the chip falling out of their cats ear. So if it can be
put anyplace else I'd say go for it.

Both my cats are chipped between the shoulderblades. It's a little
painful for the cat so best have it done at the time of your annual
shots as it's less traumatic (although for indoor cats of course you may
not have annual vaccinations)

Not sure about the setup in the US but in the UK if my cat is injured
and the microchipped scanned then regardless of where he is in the
country the ID people can be reached on a 24 hour hotline. They can then
advise of his usual vet, and also advise of his medical insurance
details - if he needs urgent attention then *any* vet can immediatly
start treatment without having to find me first to get authorisation for
the treatment cost. Big big bonus as far as I am concerned.

I had it done with my now 4 year old, and did it (when he was 2) because I saw
the result of a successful reunion with a cat who was "chipped."

Indoor only cat slipped out of apartment and was reported missing immediately.
Three weeks later same cat was picked up by someone who came into the
veterinary clinic where I worked.  Cat was scanned (as a regular practice).
Original guardian was contacted who wanted the cat back...Second party who
brought the cat in gave the cat back.  I recommend it.

Of course. All my 4 have been microchipped. They are indoor (outdoor on a
harness only) cats, but comparing to the benefit versus price of a chip, I
thought it was a worthwhile expense. My cats mean the world to me and if I
had lost one, I'd like to hope s/he would be returned if found.

Microchip is injected under the furr of the neck(scruff) so cats barely feel
it. It is safe and does not fall out like someone said. It's implanted well
into the skin. My Tiara has had it now for 6 years. She is the oldest of
mine 4.

Any shelter and rescue centre routinely scan any stray dogs and cats at the
arrival for the chip. If found, this is checked against the database, owner
informed, and reunion organized.

Finally yes, indoor cats can run outside and get lost as much as outdoor
cats. So yes, strongly suggest that if you can afford it, do it.

Having a collar with an ID tag should be an addition to the chip, as it is
easily lost/bitten off in a cat fight/ collars pulled off. Mine have lost
many over the years.

Actually, the practice - here in New York - is to inject it right under the
skin. No danger of it getting into the bloodstream or anything.

I just brought home a kitten who will be an indoor cat however she is
chipped. It's the safest way to find them and the chip won't fall off
like a collar might. It's about the size of a grain of rice between
thier shoulder blades and if they do it while they are under, they
won't feel a thing. If you do get them chipped, try www.24petwatch.com
to register them, it's a nationwide info bank. With the popularity of
chipping these days, most vets/rescue shelters have detectors and if
they ever get out, you might find them that much sooner.

I have an indoor cat who is microchiped. As you mentioned there is a
posibility of them getting out and getting lost.  Animal welfare
organisations check all pets that are lost to check for microchips.  It is
another way of insuring your cat.  I believe microchiping is a good
investment for all pet animals.

Hi

I am new to this group but wanted to respond to your question. I do not own
any indoor kept house cats as such as all mine are free to go outside if
they would like. Only one of my cats, Fluffy does not as yet fenture outside
however she is mico chipped and so are the other 3 Tigger, Misty and Gemma.
I highly recommend micro chipping and have never had a problem with it. I
also agree with the ID collers but you must remember that your cats coller
could get caught on an object outside such as a tree and come off so then
nobody has any ID on your cat unless it is also micro chipped. I hope this
has helped.
