my cat is not only licking, but pulling her fur out, of back thighs,
tail. Why, what can I do. I tried some kinda oil in her food, didn't
seem to help. Help?

Might your cat be bored?  Bored cats do tend to overgroom. It would be wise
to take to vet to see if any underlying skin condition needs treating.

I'll bet your cat is black, right?

My black cat does the same thing.  We have had some luck getting shots
for her but they alter her personality, which is creepy, I finally took
her to a cat specialist and he told me she has little black cat disease!
It is common in black cats and you can find more about it by doing a
little google search on it.  Tiny, my cat, does this over-grooming until
she looks horrendous and then will stop.  The hair all grows back and she
looks beautiful again, until next time.  I think it may have something to
do with the weather.  She was fine for six or eight months and then, when
winter started and the air got dry, she started doing it again.

Take you cat to the vet, but my guess is the vet won't have any better
answer than mine did.

I'd like to hear what happens.  Please post back.

This almost sounds otherworldly. Yes, black, but was fine for several
yrs, now, nuts. She'll stop in mid stride to lick. I don't know about
a Vet, money. Thank you for your thoughtful answer.

This could be a sign of depression.  My mom's cat had chronic depression and
would go through periods of pulling out her fur.  (She was not black)  And
that matches with the weather thing because maybe cats can be prone to
seasonal depression like humans.  My mom's cat was put on Prozac, but in my
opinion it made no difference (other than to empty mom's wallet).  Clyde
(the cat) just went through phases of hair-pulling and then re-growing.

<snip a lot of details about a black cat pulling/licking out its own
fur>

This is interesting.  My oldest, April, has been through this and she
is also black.

It all started when when we moved into my now ex-husband's house.  I
assumed it was an allergy of some sort.  We never had the money for me
to take her to the vet for something as trivial as bald spots (you did
notice the "ex" part of the husband description, right?), even though
she'd licked all the fur off her belly and inner legs.  When we moved
out and back into my mother's house, she started to let it grow back.
It took a long time - I think she was just in the habit by then - but
her fur is all back now and she's just as sleek and healthy as she was
before we moved in there.  Bad mistake on my part.

Another possiblity could be nerves.  I once knew a Siamese that would
lick all of hair off her back half if she didn't like somebody around
her.

I've never been sure that my Tiny's hair problem was not doe to her
relationship with my other cat Marco.  Marco is a male and tends to be
pushy and selfish and wants to be sure she knows he is number one cat.
it doesn't seem to bother her.  She generally defers to him without
complaint but she kick's his butt every now and then just to show him she
can do it if she feels like it.  Sometiems I think she might be
frustrated with him because he is kinda insensitive.  But I am probably
way over the top anthropamorphasizing (is that a word?).
