lists the first three ingredients as Ground yellow corn, corn gluten
meal, poultry by-product meal ..."
Why did they change the formulation. To a human it may seem minor, but
to my five cats that is a big change and they are turning their noses up
at the reforumation to a more vegetarian diet.
Rhetorically, are they pulling a "New Coke" on consumers, rather than let
them know that their product of their choice is not what they think?

As I understand it (and I could be talkin' out of' my a.s... heh) The order
of the ingredients represents the concentration. The higher they are on the
list, the more of it there is. This may not be much to us but to cats I
imagine it's quite a big deal...
