Does anyone else have a cat that doesn't like being picked up? Mine protests
and tries to escape. Funny how she seemed okay in my arms for 5 minutes when I
1st met her at the pound. She can be a great lap kitty (comes on my lap when
she pleases), but you can't force her to do that either.

All cats are different...some like to be picked up..some don't. Behavior
demonstrated at the shelter isn't necessarily the way they'll act once they're
comfortable. Enjoy your cat the way she is!

When your cat met you at the pound. She wanted to come and live with you as
she new that she would have a great life with you. Talk to her more and gently
pat her make her feel important. She needs her own space right now. You will
become great friends.

You could be talking about my cat. She hates to be picked up, but when I got
her and her brother I only held her for a few moments. She will jump on my lap
when she wants to, and I can pick her up quickly and hold her in my arms, while
seated, and scratch her head. After a few moments she realizes I am holding
her and she darts off. She will sleep on me at night, but if I start to
careess her she runs away. She's a very typical female.

Well, cats are not dogs. They come to you not to please you but to please
themselves. You can remind them the your lap is warm and invite to pet them,
and they might take up your offer - or not! Some cats dislike being picked up
and being restrained. Every cat is different. My current Korat kitten (5 months
old) was raised underfoot by her breeder in a home as is well socialized at an
early age. But there are still moments when I pick her up and she resists. She
wants to be by herself. That's when I leave her alone and eventually she will
come to me.
This I learn about cats: if you want their loyalty, you will have to respect
their wishes. Let them come to you and to trust you. They won't do it any other
way.

How true. Daisy is the only one of the cats I've had through the years who
resists. I had another cat who resisted when he was younger and then one day,
out of the blue, he seemed to mellow to it. I love my cats and respect them.
So, if she doesn't want to be picked up and enjoy free transportation around
the house on my shoulder, like her brother Mickey, so be it.

Just like with people they are all different. Some of ours like being
carried and some don't.

I have two cats. Maddie does not like to be picked up but will be on
your lap the second you sit down. Stitch will not sit on your lap but
loves to be carried around. The main problem is Maddie weighs 9 lbs. and
Stitch weighs 20 lbs.

That's why he likes to be carried! LOL.
I know what you mean. Our last cat did not like to be petted at all, his
tail was beating the moment you touched him.
The new cat is a real snuggle bear. His tail we have not seen in action yet.

Our Ralf hated being picked up. He also hated being in anyone's lap. He
would sit next to you and head butt you to get petted.
He mellowed a little and didn't totally freak out when picked up but would
still beat a hasty retreat at the first opportunity. Oddly enough he was
very cooperative when I clipped his claws. He would sit in my lap quietly
until the clipping was done and then take off.
Who's to figure cats.

I wish my Daisy was like that. I have to wrestle her into a "Cat Sack" in
order to clip them. She is most uncooperative about most things, unless she is
in a mood, and then she won't leave me alone. She is the most independent cat
I've ever had.

I've always touched my cats paws while petting them. Don't know it that
makes a difference but by the time I get around to clipping claws they are
used to my hands on their paws. I usually get some protests the first/second
time I clip them but after that I've never had a fight with any cat I've
had. I had one cat who hissed at me when I tried clipping his claws the
first few times. One day I hissed back at him and that was the end of that.

I have a cat that hates being picked up and carried. She loves people, demands
attention, loves being the "Queen of Knees", but protests if she's lifted off
the ground. (Unless you hold her belly-up while rubbing her neck -- then she
becomes like a ragdoll.)

Sounds just like my cat! Loves to snuggle but complains
when she's picked up.
