Greetings,
I have had cats for the past 15 years, currently have 4 indoor females,
all shelter saved. I have not had a "not using the litter box" problem
in at least 4 four years...
Last week, in the kitchen, somecat knocked over the trash can repeatedly
every night and while away at work. I finally fixed this by securing the
can to the wall. But there is a bit of odor from the trash, most likely
old coffee grounds on the area rug and kitchen rug. Have cleaned and
cleaned the rug with Resolve and Fabreeze to my satisfaction of clean rugs.
Now, over the past three days somecat is pooping and peeing during the
night and at work near the trash can. I have ditched the area rug to the
garage hoping that was the problem but it continues. I have now put down
a plastic trash bag on the floor and one is still doing "it" on the
plastic bag.
I fully understand health problems with cats and bladders. Had a male
cat for 11 years with bladder probs. But we have the poop problem too.
They all seem healthy. What I desperately need to do is figure out Which
Cat of four is doing it.....does anyone have any ideas how to "frame" a
cat without watching them 24/7? Ink on the paws when they walk there?
Dont' want that tracked all over...glitter on the area? I do not have a
video camera otherwise I would let that baby run all night and watch
with zest...
Any ideas on how to narrow the "bad cat" down to one is most
appreciated!!! Once done, the are going to the vet for a checkin' up!

Difficult one
Can you isolate one cat per night into a different room with separate cat
litter. That way you'll know which one is the culprit when there is no poos
near the bin. Saying that, it just may happen that she has been to the loo
just before you took her away :)
Although you have cleaned the floor up to yourscratch, cats as we all know
have sence of smell beyond our comprehension. To her it probably still
smells like a toilet, only a tad milder. May I sugest cleaning the bin area
with some biological powder. When dry poor some vinegar over(yeap, vinegar -
probably malt the best, it stinks but that's the point) . When dry, put some
dry cat food on that area(even rub a few in the carpet/flooring). Cats are
clean animals and wont wee/poo near food. It should work.
Alternativly, move the litter tray on that area.

How about the weekend? Does she not do it when you're around?

Maybe you could rent one for a night or two from somewhere or borrow one
from a friend or neighbor?
