Have a friend who has a rather sick cat, and is finally facing the grim
prospect of getting her put down.
However, this cat tends to be incredibly noisy and fidgety when in a cage,
and my friend obviously doesn't want her whining all the way to the vet
which would make the entire process even more unbearable than it needs to
be.
So my question is would a vet be able to provide - or even better would it
be possible to purchase from a store - a sedative for the old girl to make
her last journey a bit more...well sedate.
Located in Australia.
Thanks for any advice.

I'm sure there are but I wanted to mention that some vets will come to
your home to do this. It can make it easier on everyone involved.
Personally I had to take mine in, didn't want a reminder of that moment
in the house but quite a few people I know felt just the opposite and
had their vet do it at home.

There is valium. They prescribe it for cats and humans. You could also get your
vet to come to your house.

Sure they will. Also, any time I've had a cat put down, even if it's an injured
or sick stray, I ask the vet to use the same sedative they use when they put a
cat out for surgery. It's more expensive (my vet charged US $65 last time), but
it truly was a peaceful passing.

Perhaps the kindest thing to do would be to have the vet make a house call.
That's what I did..My best girl was not stressed out for her last visit..she
died peacefully at home.
